patterns- things that repeat in words, images or phrases
pictures-information given through illustration
proving- checking a prediction by reading.

Contrast and contradictions- a clear unexpected change in character what you think they would behave/ feel/ act. Versus what they actually do.
Again and again : Events and images that are described frequently or words that are used repeatedly in a text.

Personification: Describing something that is not human as acting or feeling like a human would
Idiom: A cultural expression that is not literal, or has a different meaning from what the words say
Symbolism: an image, object, idea or symbol is used to represent something other than its literal meaning.
Hyperbole: exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
Why is it important to ask questions as you read? Why does it help?
Asking questions before reading helps students access and use their prior knowledge as they construct meaning from a text. Asking questions while reading fosters active engagement with the text, and questioning after reading can be used to check for comprehension and encourage the transfer and application of knowledge

As the day went on they executed everything that she planned. suddenly, she saw there were many homeless people without a warm bed, food or loved ones. This broke her heart so she wrote a list of things to ensure that the people she saw had a great Christmas. Her family helped her to get the food needed, they cooked and distributed the food to the homeless people the following day. After Mary saw the reality, she vowed to always help any homeless people she saw.
Mary is a careful planner and we see it when she planned the day out for her family and the list she created to help the homeless people. Mary is also helpful and caring we see it by the way she cares for the homeless people and the action taken.

Memory Moment: A pause in the story while a character describes a memory, often with many details, before the story returns to the present events

A summary is a shortened version of the text. its important to summarize because helps you understand and learn important information by reducing information to its key ideas. or understand main point of text without fully reading it again.
