No. He has 3,049 marbles now. When you have to borrow, you cannot borrow anything from the zero so you have to go to the hundreds place. The 1 hundred becomes a 0 and the 0 in the tens place becomes a 10. Then you borrow from the 10 in the tens place and it becomes a 9 and the 8 in the ones place becomes an 18. Then you can subtract 18 - 9 = 9 ones. 9 tens minus 5 tens = 4 tens. 0 hundreds minus nothing still equals 0 and 3 thousand minus nothing still equals 3 thousand.
