Name the three states of matter we deal with most often on Earth.
solid, liquid, gas
What matter has a definite volume, but takes the shape of the container it is in.
liquid
Give an example of a mixture.
rocks and dirt
red and black marbles
salt and water
What is a physical property?
Anything you can observe about something using your senses.
Define mixture.
A mixture is two or more substances that are mixed together, but can still be separated.
Explain what matter is.
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
The particles in a solid don't move much and are close together.
How is a solution different from a mixture?
A solution is a type of mixture where different types of matter are mixed evenly throughout. It is very difficult to get them back apart.
When a cake bakes is it going through a chemical change or a physical change?
chemical change
Define boiling point.
How can you find an objects mass and volume?
Use a balance with weights for mass and a graduated cylinder, or L x W x H to find volume.
What does it mean when we say matter is "conserved".
Matter doesn't go away, it just changes state.
What properties might help you separate a mixture? Name at least two.
size, magnetism, shape
How is burning paper a chemical change?
When you burn paper you change its properties and it can't go back to the way it was before it burned.
Define buoyancy and give an example of something that is buoyant.
The ability of an object to float. A boat is buoyant.
My little sisters snowman was gone when we came home from school. She said it disappeared. I told her she is wrong. Is she?
She is wrong because matter doesn't ever disappear, it just changes state. The snowman probably turned into liquid and went into the ground.
Give an example of something that has a high viscosity.
syrup, oil, corn syrup
Does creating a solution cause changes or a chemical reaction to the materials that are mixed?
No, creating a solution just dissolves on material in the other; it does not create a new substance.
Mrs. Radtke added sugar to her tea. It dissolved into the tea. Is the tea experiencing a chemical or a physical change? How do you know?
Physical change because the sugar and tea are still their own substances. Their particles haven't changed.
Define density.
How close together the particles of a substance are. Denser materials have particles that are closer together in a given volume, less dense materials have fewer particles in the same volume.
Example, a piece of iron is more dense than a piece of chalk that is the same volume (size).
How would you prove gas has mass and volume?
You can use a balloon to show volume and also to demonstrate a change in weight or mass.
What reason would scientists have to check buoyancy, hardness, and magnetism?
If they don't know what something is.
Explain the following sentence by providing examples: A solution is a type of mixture, but a mixture is not always a solution.
Lemonade is a mix of lemon juice, water, and sugar. There are more than one ingredient and the ingredients are all mixed evenly in the lemonade so it is both a mixture and a solution. (hard or impossible to separate)
Trail mix is a mixture because all of the ingredients, or matter keep their own properties and aren't mixed evenly throughout. (can be separated)
We can observe when a chemical change happens. Name at least two things you may observe during a chemical change.
Matter changes color, odor, or state.
A solid forms.
A gas forms.
Heat is released or absorbed.
The change gives of light.
The change is not reversible.
Give an example of a solute and a solvent.
solvent - water
The solute dissolves into the solvent.
