What is matter?
Is everything that exists, has mass and occupies space.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas
What is mass?
The amount of matter an object has.
What force pushes an object down in a liquid?
Gravity. It pushes the object down.
What are the two fundamental properties of matter?
Mass and volume
Which state of matter has a fixed shape?
A solid
What is volume?
The amount of space an object or substance occupies
What force pushes an object upwards towards the surface?
Buoyancy. It pushes the object upwards towards the surface of the liquid.
What are molecules made of?
Atoms
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance consist in one type of matter, for example, silver.
What is density
The amount of mass per unit of volume of an object or substance
When does an object sink?
An object sinks when it is denser than the liquid. It goes towards the bottom.
How can we classify matter according to its composition?
Pure substances or mixtures
What is the difference between a homogeneous and a heterogeneous mixture?
A homogeneous mixture is a mixture such as water, while a heterogeneous mixture is a mixture such as sand.
What is the difference between melting point and boiling point?
The melting point is the temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid. The boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas
Why does a steel ship float on water?
Because the ship contains trapped air. The density of the steel and the density of the trapped air together give the ship a lower average density than water, so it floats.
