Something that has weight and takes up space
What is matter?
Spinach
Producer
Two things that move through a food chain
What are matter and energy?
Food source for producers
What is sugar?
A fallen tree that helps other things live and grow
What is a nurse log?
An organism that gets matter and energy by eating other organisms
What is a consumer?
Consumer
The source of energy for all things in a food chain.
What is the sun?
Food source for consumers
What are plants and animals?
To break down food into tiny pieces that can be used by an organism's body.
What is digest?
Something that produces its own food with matter from air and water and energy from the sun.
What is a producer?
Chicken
Consumer
How do mushrooms get matter?
They get matter from dead or decaying plants and animals
Food source for decomposers
What is dead or decaying matter?
Made of rock particles, organic matter, water, and air.
What is soil?
A tiny piece of matter that is too small to be seen with our eyes
What is a particle?
Mushroom
Decomposer
What do plants (producers) need to grow?
Matter from air and water, energy from the sun.
_________________ take dead or decaying matter and turn it into vitamins and minerals for other organisms to use
What is a decomposer?
A closed system is ...
sealed, does not allow matter or energy to travel in and out
A factor that can change in an experiment.
What is a variable?
Oatmeal
producer
How does energy travel through the food chain?
Energy from the sun allows plants (producers) to make their food by photosynthesis. Consumers eat the plants, then secondary and higher-level consumers eat those animals. When the animals die, Decomposers break down the material into nutrients for the soil.
Describe the difference between a food chain and a food web.
A food chain outlines who eats whom. A food web is all of the food chains in an ecosystem.
A fair test is...
a controlled scientific experiment where only one variable is changed at a time, while all other conditions (controlled variables) are kept the same to make sure that any results are due to the single factor being tested
