The Life of Goats
Have you ever eaten goat cheese before? Goat cheese is made from a goat's milk. Some people say that it is the healthiest cheese. It helps you to keep your bones strong and is easy to digest.
Goats like to eat everything they find! They get vitamins and nutrients when they eat the leaves from trees or grass from the ground. They also like to eat fruits and vegetables. When goats eat healthy they grow big and strong, and also to produce milk.
When goats pass away, bacteria and fungi break down the goat and return its nutrients to the soil, which can supports plant growth.
Question:
Represent the transfer of energy when a person eats goat cheese by explaining the order of energy transfer between goats, plants, and people.

Farmers use tools to loosen the soil before planting seeds so that the soil is not as compact. The theory is that loosening the soil will make more space for the roots to grow, as well as be able to access both water and air.
A professor worked with a team of scientists to study this practice. They set up an experiment where they planted sunflower seeds. Once the seeds had all sprouted, they separated the plants into different boxes, and each box had a different condition. They took notes about their boxes and how the plants grew in each one.

The scientists also took pictures of the growth of the roots. They first took a picture of the starting roots. Then, after the experiment, they took pictures of the roots from two plants in each box and made the chart below.

A. Increasing air in the soil helps plants to grow and be healthy.
B. The looser the soil is, the more we need to water the plants.
C. The more compact the soil is, the more air there is in the soil.
D. Plants need 2 ounces of water each day to be healthy and grow.
A. Increasing air in the soil helps plants to grow and be healthy.
Put the following in order from how the energy flows, as a result when bacteria and fungi break down the goat when it passes away.

Imagine you are studying about plankton. Plankton are organisms that live in oceans. You find the following chart that explains the two major types of plankton that exist. Analyze the chart and answer the questions below.

Based on the information in the table, how are the hydrosphere and biosphere interacting?
Hydrosphere: water
Biosphere: habitat for the phytoplankton and zooplankton
Is an ecosystem all the living and nonliving things and all their interactions in an area?
Yes or no? Justify your answer
Yes
People get energy by eating goat cheese. Where did the energy originally come from?
The sun.
What are two sources that plants get their energy from?
Air
Sun
Water
Part A:
What type of organisms are bacteria and fungi?
A. Consumers
B. Predators
C. Decomposers
D. Producers
C. Decomposers
Are plankton plants or animals?
plants
What would happen to the ecosystem if one species became extinct?
Other species that rely on that species would no longer have what they need to survive.
Mrs. Gallo wants to help Mrs. Hamilton make a model to show how energy transfers in water environments. Mrs. Gallo wants to end with fish, but needs help for the rest of the model.
What best describes the energy transfer in this environment amongst fish, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and the sun?
Provide a reason for your claim.
Sun- Phytoplankton- Zooplankton-Fish
What problem were the scientists most likely trying to figure out when the experiments were began?
A. Do plants really need water and sunlight in order to survive?
B. What is the relationship between root growth and leaf condition?
C. How many boxes do you need to plant in order to grow sunflowers?
D. Why do plants grow differently when the soil is loose or compact?
D. Why do plants grow differently when the soil is loose or compact?
What statement below would best support your answer to Part A for the 200 point question you just answered?
A. Bacteria and fungi help to make goat cheese.
B. Bacteria and fungi make nutrients using the sun.
C. Bacteria and fungi eat goats and likely other animals.
D. Bacteria and fungi break down dead organisms.
D. Bacteria and fungi break down dead organisms.
Why are plankton plants? Think about where their source of energy comes from.
The sun.
If a new species of plant were to be introduced to a different ecosystem, how would that affect the ecosystem for the organisms that were already native to the area?
The new species would become harmful to the native organisms and threaten the animals and plants.
How does a wolf get it's energy?
From eating
Pretend students at Southside were going to plant sunflowers at a local park. Last year, the plants did not grow at all. But, this year, scholars are asking for help to make sure the sunflowers grow healthy.
What suggestions would you give to scholars to help them grow healthy sunflowers? Choose the two best suggestions.
A. Take good pictures of the roots to see growth.
B. Remember to water the sunflower plants.
C. Make sure that the soil has at least 20% air.
D. Only grow plants that have healthy leaves.
E. Make sure that the soil is very compact.
B. Remember to water the sunflower plants.
C. Make sure that the soil has at least 20% air.
What is a good reason for a goat to not eat food?
A. to grow
B. to keep warm
C. to feed bacteria and fungi
D. to repair the body
C. to feed bacteria and fungi
Are Zooplankton plants or animals?
Animals
Give an example of producers and consumers.
Producers- the sun, plants, bees
Consumers- people and animals
Explain how energy transfers between the wolf, plant, rabbit, and sun.
The sun gives energy to the plant. The rabbit eats the plant and the wolf gets energy from the rabbit by eating it.
What is it called when organisms are recycled back into the environment?
A. Bacteria
B. Decomposition
C. Photosynthesis
B. Decomposition
How are all organisms in a food web connected?
They all rely on one another in the ecosystem to get their needs met.
Why are zooplankton animals? Think about what they do to get their energy.
They get their energy by eating.
Do plants or animals make their own food? Explain how you know this.
Plants make their own food because they are producers.
