What are 2 examples of a solid, liquid, and gas?
Answer varies
Can we see an atom in a glass of water? Yes or No
What is Melting Point?
Temperature where a solid starts turning into a liquid
What is an atom?
Smallest part of an element
What are the two types of surface tension?
Adhesion and Cohesion
Which state of matter is where the particles move freely and particles are far apart?
Gas
How do you get the atomic mass of an element? What 2 particles do you use?
Protons and Neutrons
Protons are positively charged and found inside the nucleus. Neutrons have no charge and are found inside the nucleus. Electrons are negatively charged and found outside the nucleus.
What is a solid?
Has definite shape and volume. Particles are tightly packed together
What is the polarity of a water molecule (H20)
Positive end at hydrogen and negative end at oxygen
What is the difference between an element and compound?
Element is a substance that can't be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary chemical changes. A compound is a substance made up of 2 or more different types of atoms.
What 3 things did we test in our solubility lab? What were the results?
Flour, Sugar, Olive oil. Sugar dissolved, Flour partially dissolved, and olive oil did not dissolve.
What is Mass?
A measure of how much matter an object is made of
Why does water have a high specific heat capacity? Why does it take longer for water to heat up compared to other things?
Other substances have a lower specific heat compared to water causing those other substances to heat up faster
What are 3 examples of Plasmas?
What subatomic particle is also the same as the atomic number of an element?
Protons
What is the temperature for Freezing and Melting Points? (At what temperature do states of change start to occur)
0 C or 32 F
What is the difference between sublimation and precipitation?
Sublimation is the phase change from a solid to a gas. Precipitation is the phase change from a liquid to a solid
Water has the highest specific heat capacity out of all liquids. True or False?
True
Why does a piece of wood float in water? Why does a rock sink in water?
Because the density of the piece of wood is less than water. The mass per unit volume is less in a piece of wood compared to water causing it to float. For a rock, the mass per unit volume is more than water causing it to sink.
What causes the identity of the element to change and what subatomic particle is equal to the number represented for each element?
Protons, Atomic Number
Explain the water cycle and what are the phases of change that occur? Also why is it important to learn about the water cycle?
Evaporation causes water to go from a liquid to a gas. Condensation causes water to turn from a gas to a liquid to form clouds. Precipitation causes a liquid to form into a solid when it is cold.
What is the Kinetic Theory of Matter and why does energy cause phase changes?
Kinetic Theory of Matter states that all matter consists of many very small particles which are constantly moving or in a continual state of motion. Energy causes phase changes to occur because particles move faster causing objects to form differently.
What percent of water makes up our bodies?
60%
