As a preceptor, I have to be present with the orientee at all times, even if they are experienced.

Yes, you must be within hearing distance of the orientee. They do not know what they do not know so you need to overhear conversations and be available to stop incorrect actions.

As a preceptor, I am responsible for asking the orientee for their DOT and filling it out every shift.

Correct, this is a preceptor expectation.

100

As a preceptor, I should wait until the end of my orientee's orientation to give feedback.

Incorrect. Feedback needs to be given in a timely manner and not many days or weeks later.

100

Attending to the bi-monthly preceptor meetings is a great way to learn about different preceptor topics and ask general questions about precepting.

Correct! We have new topics every other month. It is also a great way for us to bounce ideas off of each if we may be having troubles teaching a particular way or navigating a difficult conversation.

I can only precept others if I have taken the Preceptor Class.

Incorrect. You can still precept without taking the Preceptor Class. The class is designed to help you become a more well-rounded preceptor and allows you to get preceptor pay $$

As a preceptor, I need to fill out the DOT without my orientee present

False. You should go through the DOT together to allow for the orientee to ask questions

200

As a preceptor, it is okay to give negative feedback in front of patients/family members.

Incorrect. Feedback should be reserved as a conversation outside of the room unless you are needing to stop the orientee from causing patient harm.

ULearn has nine different Preceptor Preparation Program Modules to help you become a well-rounded preceptor.

Correct! Some of these modules include Responsibilities of the Preceptor and Preceptee, Preceptor Skills, Adult Learning, and more.

As a preceptor, I have a responsibility to let my educator know if I need a break from precepting.

Correct! If you have personal reasons that will prevent you from being your best at work and welcoming a new member to the team, please vocalize this to your educator so they can make accommodations.

Name the slogan that helps us remember when/to do the DOT.

As a preceptor, it would be a good idea to have a "safe word/phrase" that I can say to my orientee in order to stop them from what they are doing to prevent patient harm but not embarrass them in front of the patient.

Correct! You can use the phrase of "let me show you my trick" or "can I help you with that" to signal to your orientee that you need to step in without bringing extra attention to that situation.

LinkedIn is another source of preceptor education.

Correct! Those classes include communications to critical thinking to adult learning.

400

As a preceptor, it is okay if my personality does not match with my orientee's personality and ask that they be assigned to someone else.

Correct. Not all personalities will mesh. It is better to speak up then for both of you to struggle working together.

400

As a preceptor, it is a good idea to review previous DOT entries to get an idea of where to focus that day's tasks.

Correct! We may not have the same orientee for their entire orientation so it is a good idea to see where they may need more experience, so they are more confident when they are on their own.

400

As a preceptor, I should only give positive feedback to my orientee, even if they have areas of improvement.

Incorrect. It may be difficult to give feedback to someone when it is not all positive. However, try the Oreo way of feedback. Positive - growth opportunity - positive. Then the growth opportunity feels more positive.

There are two communications classes available to me to help me grow as a preceptor.

Incorrect. There are three classes available for you to sign up for: effective interpersonal communication, real-time feedback, and navigating conflict and difficult conversations.

500

As a preceptor, it a good idea to understand how my orientee learns best.

Correct! We will retain information better if we are taught in a way that best suits our needs: auditory, visual, or tactile.

500

As a preceptor, it is important to score my orientee's progress truthfully even if you feel like they are scoring lower than they should be at that particular time in their orientation.

Correct! The educators use the DOT progress levels to gauge on if they feel like the orientee is ready to come of orientation early, on time, or if they need extra days. We want to make sure that the orientee is ready to be on their own and will be safe on their own.

500

As a preceptor, if I am struggling with giving negative feedback to orientees, I have resources available to me.

Correct! You can seek out the charge nurse, educator, manager, assistant manager, or CERN to help you navigate these difficult conversations.

500

As a preceptor, I can always ask my educator or manager for help in areas where I am struggling so I can best help support our future orientees.

Correct! We are here for you and will be happy to have one on one conversations with you or find a course/class that can help fill those gaps.
