William Stirling played an important role in the history of Leeds and Silver Reef. What disaster did he divert and how?

Bennington, but was renamed in 1869 after Leeds, England, the place of origin for many of its settlers. Named to honor the town Bishop Benjamin Stringham later he suggested the town be called Leeds.

He averted a disaster by opening head gates to direct water from the Leeds ditch system to cool an overheating silver ore processing mill.
