  • Norma Elizabeth Boyd: An educator and the longest-living founder, she later became one of the key incorporators of the sorority.
  • Ethel Jones Mowbray: Served as the Alpha Chapter president and helped ensure the sorority's survival during its early years.
  • Alice Porter Murray: A highly skilled writer and host who contributed heavily to the sorority’s early literary and social events.
  • Sarah Meriweather Nutter: An educator who helped expand the reach of Alpha Kappa Alpha after her graduation.
  • Joanna Berry Shields: An esteemed educator who was a vital part of the early directorate.
  • Carrie Estelle Snowden: A politically active charter member of the Xi Omega Chapter who managed the sorority’s corresponding secretary duties.
  • Harriet Josephine Terry: An educator who served as Alpha Chapter president in 1910 and later helped draft the sorority's constitution.

AKA Purpose

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, as written in its Constitution, is to cultivate high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, study and alleviate problems concerning girls and women to improve their social stature, maintain a progressive interest in college life, and be of service to all mankind.
