What are tricyclic antidepressants. The most common of these is Amitriptyline (Elavil). These are similar in their effectiveness to SSRI’s but their major disadvantage is that they can be fatal in overdose (SSRI’s are relatively safe). They can also be very sedating. TCAs are also prescribed at a low dose for neuropathic pain. Other names include: clomipramine (anafranil), nortriptyline(aventyl, pamelor), maprotiline (ludiomil), desipramine (norpramin),doxepin (sinequan), trimipramine (surmontil), imipramine (surnontil, sinequan), protriptyline (vivactil)
