This is the quality of water that allows it to be the universal solvent.
What is polarity/a dipole/hydrogen bonds?
This component of the envelopes of Gram-negative bacteria causes heavy inflammation when the bacteria is killed.
What is lipopolysaccharide/endotoxin?
This is the plane in which elevation and depression of the shoulders occurs in.
What is the frontal/coronal plane?
This cell junction attaches epithelial cells to the basal lamina.
What are hemidesmosomes?
This is the step in the Cambridge Calgary observation guide that comes after the Physical Examination section.
What is Explanation and Planning?
These two major classes of macromolecules are both responsible for energy storage and contribute to the plasma membrane.
What are carbohydrates and lipids?
This is the enzyme whose presence is tested for when a coagulase test is performed.
What is coagulase?
This type of lever has the applied force in the middle (between the axis and the resistance).
What is a type 3 lever?
This is the germ layer that gives rise to all nervous tissue.
What is the ectoderm?
In this infant attachment style, the baby may be clingy or aggressive upon reunification with their mother.
What is the Ambivalent attachment style?
This is the only component of the cytoskeleton that is not dynamic. It's 10nm wide and is responsible for fastening organelles and cell-cell anchoring (e.g., desmosomes).
What are intermediate filaments?
This selective and differential medium only allows salt-loving bacteria to survive and, based on colour change, can differentiate between Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
What is Mannitol Salt Agar?
These three myofilaments can also be named the thick, thin, and elastic myofilaments.
What are myosin, actin, and titin?
This is the specific type of connective tissue that is poorly vascularised and has lots of tensile strength in one direction.
What is dense regular connective tissue?
This term has been defined in the course as "identity in action", "that which articulates the virtues of a given occupation", and "a set of values, behaviours, and relationships that underpin public trust in doctors".
What is professionalism?
This is the phase of Prophase I during meiosis in which the chiasma becomes visible.
What is diplotene?
These are the five microbial targets (i.e., the five modes of action for microbials).
What are "cell wall", "plasma membrane", "nucleic acid synthesis", "protein synthesis", and "metabolites"?
This is the arrangement of fibres in the deltoid muscle.
What is a multipennate muscle arrangement?
This is the component of H&E that would bind to a basophilic thing.
What is haematoxylin?
These three issues form the interrelated triple planetary crisis.
What are biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution?
A 22 year old male, who seems healthy physically and mentally, is diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the soft tissues. After genetic testing, the individual's karyotype is notated by a cytogeneticist as 46,XY/46,XY,t(X;18)(p11.2,q11.2). Therefore, his karyotype is likely an example of this structural chromosomal abnormality
What is a mosaic balanced translocation?
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a culturable bacteria known as the 'flesh eating bacterium'. Some strains are non-pathogenic and exist in our normal flora. Others are opportunistic and can cause pharyngitis (as in strep throat), skin infections, and invasive infections. After the infection clears, the immune system can become overactive and can mistake parts of the kidney and heart for the infection, leading to heart failure.
If a scientist was to investigate whether GAS caused heart failure, they would notice that at least one of Koch's postulates would fail (after all, they are quite outdated). Specifically, these ones would fail.
What are postulates 1, 3, and 4?
A weightlifter goes to a physiotherapist with a bruise on his quadriceps muscle. He says that a weight fell on his thigh while he was performing a squat. He also reveals that it was annoying because at that very moment, he was getting a really nice concentric contraction in his glutes and his hamstrings. Therefore, the injury sustained to his quadriceps muscle happened when it was experiencing this type of muscle contraction.
What is concentric contraction?
A histologist is working on a stain for a protein called eleidin, which she knows can be found in the skin. After staining various sections of skin from areas of the body, she notices that whenever hair follicles are present, the stain is not retained. She suspects that eleidin might be associated with this layer of the epidermis.
What is the stratum lucidum?
A 20 year old woman's NIPT screening test detects chromosomal abnormalities, and she becomes worried. Her doctor tells her that she can follow this with a diagnostic test like amniocentesis. After discussing with the doctor, the woman is confused because she learns that this diagnostic test is less accurate (lower sensitivity) than the screening test. The doctor could reassure her by responding with these two reasons.
What are "Tests relying on different indicators" & "Sensitivity can be misleading when incidence is low"?
