The innermost layer of the heart.
What is the endocardium?
These are the upper chambers of the heart.
What are the atria? (singular: atrium)
This valve has three flaps and is located in the right side of the heart.
What is the tricuspid valve?
This record of the heart vessels is obtained by injecting radioplaque dye into the circulatory system.
What is an angiogram?
A condition of abnormally slow heartbeat less than 60 beats per minute.
What is bradycardia?
The measurement of the force exerted by blood against the wall of a blood vessel.
What is blood pressure?
These are the larger, lower chambers of the heart.
What are the ventricles?
This valve has two flaps and is located in the left side of the heart.
What is the mitral (or bicuspid) valve?
This medical term describes a heart that is enlarged.
What is cardiomegaly?
The condition in which there is an abnormal or lack of rhythym of the heartbeat.
What is arrhythmia?
This node is the pacemaker of the heart.
What is the sinoatrial (SA) node?
This atrium receives oxygen rich blood from the lungs.
What is the left atrium?
These could be called the "half moon" valves.
What are the semilunar valves?
This noninvasive method for evaluating the heart by ultrasound can be obtained painlessly at the patient's bedside or outpatient setting.
What is echocardiograpy?
Rapid uncoordinated contractions of the heart.
What is fibrillation?
This structure divides the heart into the right and left sides.
What is the septum?
This ventricle pumps blood through the semilunar valve to the lungs.
What is the right ventricle?
Condition in which the cusps of the valve are too loose and fail to shut properly. Also called heart valve incompetence or insufficiency
What is heart valve prolapse?
This medical term describes a condition of hardening of arteries.
What is arteriosclerosis?
This is a condition where the electrical impulse is blocked from traveling down the area formerly know as the Bundle of His.
What is bundle branch block?
This wave on an EKG corresponds to contraction of the atria.
What is the p wave?
This ventricle sends blood to all parts of the body except the lungs.
What is the left ventricle?
This disease process is characterized by bacterial or fungal growths, called vegetations, that collect in the endothelium of the heart and/or on the valves of the heart
What is endocarditis?
This is a condition in which a blood clot is within the vascular system (stationary).
What is a thrombosis?
This is a common complication of atrial fibrillation because the heart is not effectively pumping. This causes the blood to pool within the heart allowing the blood to clot and travel elsewhere within the body.
What is an embolism?
