Providing a safe space for students to talk about their problems and/or feelings.
Helping them learn tools and strategies to express their feelings and overcome any challenges.

In school counseling, what does "Confidentiality" mean and what are the rules/limits of it?
Confidentiality means that everything that you discuss with me is private and will stay between us.
The IMPORTANT rules/limits for confidentiality are that I HAVE to share what you tell me if:
1. Someone is hurting you/you are in danger
2. You are going to hurt someone else/someone else is in danger
3. You are hurting yourself or planning to hurt yourself
How many years has Ms. Meadows been a school counselor?
This is my first year as a school counselor and I am so excited that I get to start my career here at Coker with all of you! :)
Your school counselor provides long term therapy
FALSE! Your school counselor is not the same as a mental health therapist. School counselors provide SHORT-TERM counseling services. If I determine that a student needs to receive counseling services over a longer time period, I will work with the student and their families to get them set up with an outside therapist.
Is the school counselor's job to give students advice and "fix" their problems for them?
No, school counselors help students better understand themselves and their problems. School counselors help students come up with different solutions to their problems or ways to cope with their feelings. YOU are the only one that can make the choice to work on a problem. I am here to support you along the way!
