These meds are used to reduce anxiety in patients with personality disorders.
*Note: These meds may also worsen sx of anxiety and should be prescribed with caution!
What are benzos?
Ex: Ativan, Klonopin, Xanas, Valium
-Buspar can also be given (anti-anxiety w/ less SE than Benzos)
This class of meds are given to treat hostility, aggression, violent behavior, psychosis associated with dementia.
What are antipsychotics?
Ex: Risperdal, Zyprexa, Haldol
This class of medication works by magnifying GABA's effects on the brain; can decrease seizures and DTs.
SE: sedation, drowsiness, and confusion
What are benzos?
Ex: Valium, Librium, Ativan
Fun fact: These should only be used for only 5-7 days to prevent rebound and dependence
This medication is used to control seizures for pts that are detoxing from ETOH use.
What is Tegretol (carbamazepine)?
This class of medication can be used for PTSD & performance anxiety and works by blocking peripheral or central norepinephrine activity and symptoms of anxiety (sweating, palpitations, tremors).
SE: Weakness, fatigue, bradycardia, depression, hypotension
What are beta-blockers?
Ex: Propranolol (Inderal), Atenolol (Tenormin)
These meds can be used for BPD to tx sadness, low mood, anxiety, and emotional reactivity.
SE: n/v/d, postural hypotension, QT prolongation
What are anti-depressants?
Ex: Prozac (SSRI), Zoloft (SSRI), Effexor (MAOI), Nardil (MAOI), Wellbutrin
This medication is given to treat severe agitation for clients with dementia.
What is Haldol?
This class of meds are used to control increased BP when it cannot be managed by benzos.
What are antihypertensives (beta-blockers, alpha agonist)?
Ex: Atenolol, Propanolol, Catapres
This medication is given to delirium pts who are extremely agitated.
This class of meds is used to tx anxiety by acting through the CNS, and have effects such as muscle relaxation, sedative, anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects.
Hint: These meds also have a high risk for dependence and overdose.

-Haldol (typical): SE include cardiac monitor, agranulocytosis, orthostatic hypotension, anticholinergic (sedation, blurred vision, urinary retention, sexual dysfx, wt.gain, dry mouth) EPS
-Atypical: Zyprexa, Clozaril, Seroquel, Risperdal; have metabolic SE
This classification of meds target apathy, psychosis, anxiety, nighttime behavior, ADL’s, and agitation associated with dementia.
What are cholinesterase inhibitors?
Ex: Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne
This medication causes side effects that may make someone sick when they ingest ETOH. This is used for ETOH aversion for detox pts.
What is Antabuse?
*Educate the pt on the fx of this med & to avoid food/drink that may have alcohol.

What is benzodiazepine?

Hint: These meds are also used for tx of ETOH withdrawal and bipolar disorder.
What are anticonvulsants?
-Depakote: goal is 50-100; SE include elevated liver enzymes, GI distress, thrombocytopenia
-Tegretol: goal is 8-12
-Lamictal: SE includes Steven Johnson Syndrome
This classification of medications is used to tx the most common psychiatric illness in older adults, as well as symptoms of dementia.
What are antidepressants?

These medications are used to control/prevent seizures, which may be a dangerous symptom of ETOH withdrawal.
What are anticonvulsants?

This can be given as a treatment for B1 deficiency.
