Report concerns as soon a possible to DHS (see important numbers reference card for the number). Consult with administration or mental health staff when you have questions about how to report. When you make a report, you need to inform admin/mental health.

Counselors prepare students for post secondary options, build schedules at the secondary level, provide social/emotional supports, support in crisis intervention (Suicide/Threat/Self-injury), etc.
What is safe to tell used for and how do you make a report?
Safe to tell is used for threatening behavior or activities endangering themselves or others. They can be reached by phone, text, or email. See safe2tell.org for additional information.

A school psychologist can administer cognitive testing for purposes of special education or gifted and talented. Social workers typically completes court documentation for truancy filings. Staff often seek out the social worker for community resources, though both can support with resource information.

You can look on our KCAA website, find a variety of brochures outside the DH clinic or the counseling offices on the 4th floor, you can call 211, etc.
Scenario: Your student is crying in your classroom and you don't know what's happening. How do you respond?
Teachers/staff have a close relationship with their students and in many cases know them much better than anyone else.
Check in with your student to begin problem solving and de-escalation, and keep them in the classroom as appropriate.
What is the difference between a 504 and IEP?
IEP's provide academic, speech, PT/OT, and/or social emotional supports.
Situation: Kayla shares with her teacher that she is experiencing some sort of abuse at home. Her teacher then consults with another staff member. Who is responsible for making the report?

Situation: Your student is struggling with behavior in your classroom and you understand that they are experiencing some difficulties at home. Who can you access for supports?
You can talk with you team lead and consider initiating the MTSS process. You can also access the counselors, social worker, or psychologist to consult about the home situation.
Situation: A parent emails you about concerns that they think their child has ADHD and wondering if you think that they need medication. How should you respond?
Ask the parent if they are comfortable in you making a referral to someone on the mental health team to discuss concerns with the parent. We don't diagnose or recommend medication.
Scenario: Your student reports to you that they feel unsafe going home. How do you respond?
