One reason is climate change.  There was a drought which caused the crops to die. 

Next, the failure of the crops led to a famine.  A famine is when a large number of people die of starvation.  The famine weakened the power of the empires and allowed other groups to invade.  

In the end, Alexander the Great conquers both of these empires within 10 years.
