Blood doping increases the thickness of the blood traveling through the body. If the blood is thicker than usual, the heart has to work much harder to pump the blood. If the heart works too hard for too long, it can lead to heart failure.

The digestive system breaks molecules down into smaller molecules (starch into glucose). Once broken down, the red blood cells inside of the ciruculatory system "pick up" the molecules and deliver them to the cells. Therefore, the digestive system and the circulatory system have to work together.

There are two accurate ways to check for blood doping. One way to check for evidence of blood doping is to check the athletes hemoglobin levels. What is the other way that we discussed in class to check for blood doping? Be specific!
To check for blood doping, you can check the age of the red blood cells. Since red blood cells are constantly being created, your body is full of "new" red blood cells. Athletes that are blood doping are "injecting" old blood into the body. Since the old blood is full of old red blood cells, the athlete would have a an unusually high number of old red blood cells within his system.
Explain why training at a higher altitude can naturally increase red blood cell count?
At the higher altitudes, the oxygen is much thinner. Since your body is not breathing in the normal amount of oxygen at a higher altitude, your body must adapt by creating more red blood cells.
Why does Protein break down into Amino Acids within the digestive system, just to combine back into Protein again once it reaches the cell?
Protein is too large to fit inside of the circulatory system and the cell. Therefore, it must break down into Amino Acids to fit inside of the cell. Once in the cell it can combine to form the larger protein again.

Chapter One Question: Explain why having Diabetes makes Elisa feel tired all the time?
With having diabetes, Elisa's body is not creating insulin. Without insulin, glucose cannot get inside of Elisa's cells. Since her cells are not receiving glucose, her body cannot go through cellular respiration which creates energy within her body. Without the energy being created, Elisa feels tired all the time.
Explain why having an injury to the pancreas can prevent cellular respiration from occuring?
If you have an injury to the pancreas, your body is not producing digestive enzymes. Without the digestive enzymes molecules such as starch cannot break down into glucose. Without glucose in the cell, oxygen has nothing to react with. Therefore, cellular respiration cannot occur.
Without Red Blood Cells, the cells will not receive oxygen nor glucose which is needed for cellular respiration to occur.
