What is a front?

A weather front is a boundary separating bands of thunderstorms and severe weather, and may on occasion be preceded by squall lines or dry lines.

100

What are jet streams.

Fast flowing air currents

100

What does a weather map do?

A weather map and its symbols gather a lot of weather information quickly and without using a lot of words. Just as equations are the language of mathematics, weather symbols are the language of weather.

100

What are air masses

An air mass consists of a vast quantity of air that possesses a common temperature and moisture content throughout its reach.

100

When does a weather pattern occur?

A weather pattern occurs when the weather stays the same for days or weeks at a time.

200

Where does a warm front form?

Warm fronts often form on the east side of low-pressure systems where warmer air from the south is pushed north.

200

Where do they form ( north ,south, etc)

East

200

What does a isotherm show

Maps using isotherms show temperature gradients

200

What are the different types of air masses

Continental polar marine, time polar, continental tropical marine, time tropical

200

what are the common weather patterns?

Hot and dry, cold, rainy and unusual long-lasting weather patterns

300

How does a front form?

300

How do they form

Jet streams form when warm air masses meet cold air masses in the atmosphere

300

What does a isotach show

They analyze lines of equal wind speed

300

What do fronts and air masses have in common

When two different air masses collide, the warmer air rises above the colder, denser air. In the northern hemisphere, most fronts travel from west to east carrying clouds and rain. As a front passes through an area, changes in wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure and moisture result.

300

What is the weather pattern in winter

During winter, the weather pattern is cold

400

How long does the effect of a cold front last?

The effects from a cold front can last from hours to days.

400

Why do aircraft use them

To boost their speed

400

Why do we need to understand the symbols on a weather map?

A weather map and its symbols are meant to convey a lot of weather information quickly and without using a lot of words. Just as equations are the language of mathematics, weather symbols are the language of weather, so that anyone looking at a map should be able to decipher the same exact information from it.

400

What are the four types of air masses and where does each form?

Polar forms over cold areas, tropical forms over warm areas, continental forms over land, and maritime forms over the oceans.

400

What is the weather pattern for summer

It is hot and dry

500

How does an occluded front affect weather

Occluded fronts usually form around areas of low atmospheric pressure. There is often precipitation along an occluded front from cumulonimbus or nimbostratus clouds. Wind changes direction as the front passes and the temperature either warms or cools.

500

How do they affect weather

The fast-moving air currents in a jet stream can transport weather systems across the United States, affecting temperature and precipitation.

500

What happens if there was no weather map

We would not be able to understand weather

500

How do they affect weather patterns

 By creating fronts and jetstreams.

500

What causes weather patterns to change

Daily changes in the weather are due to winds and storms. Seasonal changes are due to the Earth revolving around the sun.
