What are the rules about binders?

You can have as much as you want inside, and are expected to carry a U.S map with state names.

100

Precipitation

any liquid or solid water particle—such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail—that falls from atmospheric clouds to the Earth's surface due to gravity

100

What is the difference between climate and weather?

Climate is long term while weather is short term.

100

Would you use an anemometer or a wind vane when you are trying to find wind speed?

Anomometer

200

At least 50% of questions based on:

Interpretations of weather data displayed in maps, graphs, images, photographs, charts, and/or tables to analyze data.

200

Atmosphere and levels (EThMeSTro)

The atmosphere is the protective, gaseous envelope (air) surrounding the Earth, held in place by gravity.

Exosphere, Thermosphere, Mesosphere, Stratosphere, Troposphere (we live here).

200

What are the main components of weather?

Temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, and cloud cover.

200

What does the 20% chance of rain actually mean?

It means a 20% probability that any given point in the forecast area will recieve measurable rain (atleast 0.001 inches).

300

Calculator rules?

Each team may bring up to two Class II calculators.

300

Cloud types

High-level (above 20,000 ft), Ci Cc Cs (CIRRUS)

Mid-level (6,500 to 20,000 ft), Ac As Ns (ALTO) (STRATUS)

Low-level (below 6,500 ft), St Cu Sc Cb (STRATUS) (NIMBUS)

300

What causes the seasons?

The Earth's tilt.

300

Can lightning strike the same place twice? If yes, why?

Yes, an example of this is the NYC Empire State Building, which is struck over 25 times a year. Lightning is attracted to the highest and sharpest areas. This is why some places are struck by lightning multiple times.

400

If the event features rotation through a series of stations

No material may be removed from the binder during the event.

400

Air mass

A huge body of air (hundreds or thousands of miles wide) with, generally, the same temperature and moisture content throughout.

400

What does a barometer measure?

Atmospheric pressure.

400

How many days does it take before a forecast is no longer accurate?

A forecast stops being accurate after 10 days.

500

Cloud prefixes

Cirro - high level

Alto - mid level

Nimbo - rain-producing clouds

Cumulo - puffy, vertically growing

Strato/Stratus - layered or sheet-like

500

Which layer holds most of the atmosphere's moisture?

The troposphere.
