Professor speaks, "I want to see the LS questions - where can I see them?"
What is: Due to the extensive network of related questions and the fact that each student is asked a unique set of questions based on current knowledge, you cannot preview them in a list form. After students have worked in LS, you CAN see the questions that your students struggled with the most - this does allow you to get a good sense of exactly what those questions are as well as provides you with the opportunity to adjust your lecture(s) based on your students' challenges!

What data does SmartBook collect to figure out to add questions or not? Is this static or dynamic?
SmartBook collects all of the same data points that LearnSmart uses (for example confidence rating, degree of correctness, time on task, etc.) and then combines that info with special algorithms to determine what content will be most beneficial for the student and whether that is material to be read or material in the form of questions. Just like LearnSmart, SmartBook is designed to give the student the most valuable study time possible. It's dynamic as is adapts to the individual learner.

What happens in the Read stage?
During the Read stage, students are presented with an eBook that has been “highlighted” to show the content they should focus on. Initially, the highlighted content is determined by 1)“population data” – topics that other students who have already answered LearnSmart questions struggled with and 2) the highest priority Learning Objectives identified by the author and subject matter expert for that particular LearnSmart product. If this is a first edition product that does not yet have student users, the highlights come from the highest priority Learning Objectives identified by the author and subject matter expert. This is “critical” content because it is basic concepts needed for course success as well as areas of known difficulty. As the student progresses through the Read and Practice stages, the highlights adapt to focus students on the content they need the most based on their individual needs.

What 3 actions need to occur PRIOR to cloning?
OPPORTUNITY RESOLUTION - Prior to the mass clone you will need to review your existing Fall 2013 opportunities and bring them to a terminal state. · UPDATING CONTACTS – Inactivate and add new contacts to your database. You don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to work with a new incoming professor so work with your departments and with the on-line resources at each account to gather up professor information and update contacts as you work. · DIGITAL SUCCESS RECORDS – The deadline for existing Digital Record creation has passed so use the new Digital Record creation form in SFDC to easily ensure you have all of your digital adoptions recorded from this point forward. ALL adoptions that have a digital component should have an associated DIGITAL RECORD!

What does the slider bar remove from LearnSmart?
By moving the slider bar to the left, the instructor removes the higher level concept questions from that topic. Doing this reduces the average amount of time a student will spend to complete the assignment. The act of reducing the higher level content sets the stage for asking students to come to class with a base level of knowledge thereby freeing the instructor to lecture on greater concepts vs. definitions and basic, low level content.

What determines the highlighted section of the textbook that students open in SmartBook?
Initially, it is population data collected from LearnSmart for that product. The highlighted sections in SmartBook are based on the heat maps that we use today to help authors and subject matter experts see difficult topics based on existing student performance and data. As students Practice in SmartBook, the highlights will adjust to highlight the content that is most beneficial to them.

Can instructors choose sections within SmartBook and assign those? How?
What instructors assign is LearnSmart. Therefore, when in Connect Plus, instructors will be able to omit chapter sections/topics as they see fit from the LearnSmart module they are assigning. The material will remain in the Read section, but there will be no highlighting. Also, the Practice section will not include those topics

Explain the gaming feature in LearnSmart. Does "Your Student Standing" affect your LearnSmart "grade?"
No, your student standing score does not affect your LearnSmart grade - your percentage of accomplishment. Students can engage in some friendly competition with classmates and other students using LearnSmart across the country or in their local section (this can be enabled oe disabled by the instructor!).

What happens in the Preview stage?
During the Preview stage, students see a thumbnail view of the chapter providing them with an understanding of the basic organization of the material. This allows students to build a framework of the content they are about to learn, which helps to organize the content in their brain. Students can also choose to do the Outline the Chapter activity where they have to match subheadings to headlines from the chapter. This is an optional exercise and does not impact the student’s LearnSmart results.

LearnSmart indicates the number of "items left" in the assignment - what does this number mean? Is it the number of questions left? Can an instructor change this number?
The number of items left represents the topics the student has left to learn. Items means topics and topics often include more questions than one, so no, items left does not equal questions left. The instructor can change this number by reducing topics and or scaling back the content depth.

What happens in the Recharge stage?
Just as in LearnSmart, SmartBook determines what information the learner is most likely to forget (and when he/she is most likely to forget). The Recharge component of SmartBook presents the student with that content along with any other material that he or she still needs to learn in order to master the material.

Are there video tutorials to help you with your summer SFDC work and if so, where are they found?
Videos have been posted to MHU to help support you throughout this planning process. These are designed to provide you with information on how to organize and update your information within SFDC and provide you with a quick review of the functional path to update all of your information. To access these login into SFDC using your standard login. In the upper right hand corner click on the MHE located in the blue field and select MHU from your drop down. Once in MHU, click on the Video Library tab. Once you are in the video library, select the Filter by Field of Study link and then select Salesforce. This will bring you to a listing of videos to support you in your summer SFDC work!

What does the "% grade" mean in the LearnSmart Reports? What is actually measured?
The % grade is the student progress measure of the what the instructor assigned. 80% means the student accomplished 80% of the content assigned by the instructor. If the instructor "customized" LearnSmart by reducing topics or scaling back the module content, this 80% represents 80% of what was assigned, not 80% of the entire module. Only if the instructor made no changes to the content does this 80% represent 80% of all of the module content!

What happens in the Practice stage?
Practice is the LearnSmart portion of SmartBook. These ARE the LearnSmart questions. If students are struggling with a question and want to go to that part of the book they can click on the Read About button. If they choose to do so, the system will note that the student has done this and that Learning Objective will be brought back for re view during the Recharge phase. Clicking on this tells the system that the student does not know this content.

No. Like LearnSmart, SmartBook standalone does not use assignments. Instead, the instructor can set suggested date ranges for the chapters.
