 the smallest of all the Great Lakes, with a surface area of 7,340 square miles (18,960 square kilometers), but its waters run deep. It holds about four times the water volume, at 393 cubic miles

positioned at the base of the Niagara Falls. It is bordered by Ontario, Canada, to the southwest and north and New York to the south. The St. Lawrence River provides the lake's outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has a number of lagoons and baymouth bars, which are formations made of sand, mud or other debris that close off bay areas.

There are a number of islands on the lake, including the Thousand Islands region, which is an archipelago of nearly 2,000 islands that line the U.S. and Canadian border. While many of the islands are small or even uninhabitable, the largest is Wolfe Island. It is 48 square miles

a United States National Lakeshore located along the northwest coast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan in Leelanau and Benzie counties near Empire, Michigan. The park covers a 35-mile-long (56 km) stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou islands. This Northern Michigan park was established primarily because of its outstanding natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations, and ancient glacial phenomena. The lakeshore also contains many cultural features including the 1871 South Manitou Island Lighthouse, three former stations of the Coast Guard (formerly the Life-Saving Service) and an extensive rural historic farm district. In 2011, the area won the title of "The Most Beautiful Place in America" from Good Morning America.

They were a Woodland tribe, speaking an Algonquian language, and were related to the Sac and Fox. By the mid-eighteenth century these native americans lived in two communities, the "Prairie Band," along Illinois's Sangamon River, and the "Vermillion Band," east of the Wabash River in Indiana.

It has the longest shoreline of the Great Lakes, extending 3,827 miles and home to 30,000 islands.

Ojibwe legends tell of the water monster "Mishebeshu" (great lynx), who is said to have an underwater den near the mouth of the Serpent River that flows into the lake.

Native American people who traditionally lived near the Great Lakes. Their lands included parts of what are now the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. They were closely related to their neighbors, the Ottawa and the Ojibwa. These natives built large, bark-covered houses.

First visited by French explorers in the 1600s, this island was an ancient Indian burial ground called Michilimackinac (“Great Turtle”) when, because of its strategic location, the British established a fort there in 1780. After the United States took possession (1783), it became the headquarters of John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company and later developed as a resort. Occupied by the British during the War of 1812, it was regained by the United States in 1815.
