Name at least two basic steps to Good Impromptu Reading.

  • Skim quickly for extremely long or difficult-to-pronounce words. Do not be afraid to delay reading until you ask the teacher, “How do you say this?” or “What is this?”
  • Make sure your posture is correct, whether seated or standing.
  • Face the direction of most the audience. For example, if you are in front of the room, stand and turn around. IF the room is large or if the AC or heating system is loud, always stand to aid projection.
  • Get a good deep breath before you begin. (Your audience should not hear you take this breath.)
  • As you read, try to fluidly without pausing until you reach a mark of punctuation.
  • Watch for question marks in advance so you can use your voice to ask the question rather than tell it.
  • Read the last phrase with a note of finality. Usually this can be communicated by a downward inflection on the last word or syllable.
  • If you stumble a word, do not get flustered or give up. Clarify (if possible) and then continue.
