The History of the Dividing Line betwixt Virginia and North Carolina - 1728

Background Context: William Byrd II (1674–1744) was a wealthy English colonist, plantation owner, and government official in colonial Virginia during the early 1700s.

“The Indians are extremely lazy, and will not take the pains to improve their land. They are content to live from hand to mouth, like the wild beasts of the forest. Instead of cultivating the earth, they choose rather to hunt, which makes them wanderers, and consequently gives them no attachment to any particular spot of land.

This is the reason they claim the right of roaming over vast tracts of country, though they make no other use of it than to chase the deer and other game. Thus they leave the land waste and unimproved, which would otherwise be of great benefit to mankind.”

It is unreliable because this source only describes the perspective of William Byrd who has a biased point of view of Native Americans.
