Are there more black men in prison or college?
College. Despite the wide acceptance of the “Black men in prison” myth, the numbers don't support the myth. According to the U.S. Census 1.4 million college students are black men while 846,000 black men are incarcerated. The acceptance of this myth over-sells the problem and perpetuates the idea that black men are inherently bad. To further analyze the numbers one should ask how many black traditional college-aged (18-25) students represent the prison population to get a better understanding of choices made by young blacks.

______ V. ______ (1896), is a landmark United States Supreme Court decision upholding the constitutionality of state laws requiring racial segregation in public facilities under the doctrine of "separate but equal."
Plessy V. Ferguson. There were not as many public schools available for blacks. If a town did not have enough money for two separate schools, they built only one school – for white children. This was especially true in the rural towns, because most rural towns had little money. Implications: Among the African Americans who did attend school, most were in the fourth grade or lower. Many left school after fourth grade. Therefore it would be a long time before there would be a large number of blacks going to college.

True or False. The "separate but equal" legislation ensured that the quality of education and curriculum was the same for blacks and whites as long as they were taught in different facilities.
False. There were limits on what blacks could be taught in school. White school leaders did not want black children to be exposed to ideas like equality and freedom. Southern schools were not allowed to use books that included the Declaration of Independence or the U. S. Constitution. These documents state that government should get its power from the CONSENT of the governed. Reading them would confirm for African Americans that they were being denied the rights allegedly guaranteed to all citizens.
