How do we get the minerals our bodies need?

By eating the right kind of food

10

What is the scientific classification of minerals based on?

Chemistry

10

What is sulfur called in the Bible? Give 2 examples for full points

Brimstone or burning stone

10

Where is the only diamond-producing site in the world that is open to the public?

Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas

Where can stibnite be found? Give 3.

China, Japan, Germany, Russia, Bolivia,, Romania, the Czech Republic, Canada, and, Mexico

20

What are the three types of rocks, and when were they formed?

igneous (like lava), metamorphic (like marble), and sedimentary (like sandstone). All three kinds of rocks were formed both during the Creation week and the Flood year.

20

What does vitreous mean?

It appears like broken glass

20

What are two odd properties of sulfur?

80%

20

What creation scientist has studied biotite minerals in granites since the 1960s?

Dr. Robert Gentry

30

Explain how geodes are formed.

Geodes are created in sedimentary and volcanic rock. The round or sphere-shaped oddities are formed because there are cavities inside them, often left behind from gas bubbles, which water and minerals pass through. The rock exterior hardens and crystals form on the inside

30

List 4 of the 6 ways to determine what a mineral is.

Luster: Metallic to dull characteristics. 2. Specific Gravity: Compares a mineral’s weight to that of an equal volume of water. 3. Color: Should never be the primary means of identification. 4. Hardness: Mohs’ scale measures this from 1 (soft) to 10 (hard). 5. Streak: Scraping a mineral and examining this powder. 6. Crystal Symmetry: Cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, monoclinic, ortriclinic.

30

List the 3 colors and gemstone types of beryl.

Pale blue is aquamarine, yellow is heliodor, and
pink is morganite.

30

Why are diamonds used for engagement rings?

In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria, commissioned the very first diamond, engagement ring on record for his betrothed,, Mary of Burgundy. This sparked a trend for, diamond rings among European aristocracy and, nobility

30

What do we mean by the word “symmetry” in the case of gemstones and other minerals?

The word carries with it the idea of organization., In the case of gemstones or other minerals, this, organization is obtained by ordering atoms and, compounds at a microscopic level.

40

Name four of the six basic types of crystal structure.

Answers should include four of the following: cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, monoclinic, triclinic

40

What is the first question we ask as we work to identify an unknown mineral? Please phrase your answer like a question.

Is the luster metallic or non-metallic?

40

Who first developed fireworks? What was combined to create them?

The Chinese, they combined the mineral sulfur

with charcoal and potassium nitrate

40

What is the most famous of all diamonds? Why is it so rare?

The Hope Diamond, the size and color

40

What do the assumptions used with radiometric dating and radioactive decay fail to take into account?

These assumptions do not take into account, forces that could add to or impact the isotopes, over the period of their existence.

50

What kind of rock did Michelangelo use to sculpt his figure of Moses?

marble

50

What are some items that can be used to show scale when taking a photo of a mineral?

Ruler, rock hammer, a coin

50

Define geologist.

One who studies the rocks and minerals of earth

50

How thin can diamond-cutting tools slice metal?

Thinner than a human hair.

50

What are some assumptions that go into radiometric dating and radioactive decay used to date rocks?

Assumptions include: radioactive atoms have, all changed at a constant rate, and that there is, a specific number of parent atoms to start with, based on how many parent and daughter atoms, they find in their sample. They also have to, assume that all the daughter atoms were formed, through radioactive decay
