Dilute means...

a solution with a small amount of solute and a large amount of solvent

100

What does WHMIS stand for?

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

100
What is the formula to calculate density?
What is mass/ volume (mass divided by volume)
100

What is the difference between homogenous and heterogeneous?

What is homogenous - same structure quality or kind. pure heterogeneous - made up of parts. mixed

100
What is the force that opposes buoyancy?
Gravity
200
What is the difference between a solvent and a solute?
What is solvent - a substance that dissolves a solute to form a solute solute - a substance that dissolves in a solvent
200

Two properties of a fluid

Has no fixed shape/can take the shape of its containers and can flow

200
What is viscosity?
What is the thickness or thinness of a liquid
200

Pure Substance can be...

What is elements or compounds?
200
What is the formula to calculate pressure?
What is pressure = force/area (force divided by area)
300
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated?
What is saturated - solution that contains a specific amount of solvent at a specific solution at a given temperature. unsaturated - a solution in which more of the solute could dissolve in a specific amount of solvent at the same temp.
300

Four useful properties of fluids

Density, viscosity, buoyancy and compressibility

300
Compare the densities of solids, liquids, and gases
solids - very dense liquids - some what dense gases - not dense
300

Salt water is a....

Muddy water is a...

What is a solution and a suspension
300
What is a hydraulic system? (definition)
What is a device that transmits an applied force through a liquid to move something else by means of pressure
400

What three factors affect solubility?

Amount of solute, amount of solvent, temperature

400

What salt water is more concentrated? Cup A) 12g salt in 72mL of water, or Cup B) 15g salt in 80mL of water

Cup B

400
How does the viscosity of a liquid change in relation to temperature?
What is when temperature increases the viscosity decreases and as it cools the viscosity increases.
400

What is a valve? What is a pump?

Valve: controls the flow of fluids

Pump: transports fluids

400
What is a pneumatic system?
What is a system in which a gas, such as air, transmits a force exerted on the gas in an enclosed space?
500

Describe the 4 points of the particle model of matter (PMOM).

What is 1. all substances are made up of particles 2. particles have space between them 3. particles always move 4. particles in a substance attract each other.

500

Solubility means... (be specific!)

The ability to dissolve, it is the mass of solute that can be dissolved in a given amount of volume at a given temperature

500

What is the relationship between density, temperature and volume?

Temperature increases = volume increases = less dense

Temperature decreases = volume decreases = more dense

500

List and describe the four different mixtures

Mechanical mixture - can see the different parts

Solution - all looks the same, two or more compounds

Suspension - layers separate, small particle suspended in it

Colloid - Cloudy mixture, even smaller particles suspended in it

500

Why can gases compress but liquids cannot?

Because there is more space between the particles of gases which compresses together when pressure is applied. The particles in a liquid do not have enough space to compress.
