With a slight change of spelling the name fit into the watertribe naming style. Ironically Dee Bradley Baker's (the voice of Appa, Momo and most animals on the show) daughter is named Cora as well.

Avatar was suppose to be set in a very futuristic world. Mike and Bryan loved the idea of future meets nature and were inspired by director Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli to create something similar to his work.

Where did the idea for Naga originate?
Mike and Bryan originally wanted Aang to have a polar bear dog as his companion in the early stages of the shows creation. Therefore, Naga has been around since before Avatar the last airbender even aired.
