Mixtures can be taken apart after being mixed
True
True or false
Solutions can be taken apart after being mixed
False
Float
What did we use to make the stress ball?
- Water
- Corn starch
True or false
Sometimes science experiments do not always turn out the way that we predicted or hoped.
True
What is a mixture?
Two or more things put together physically, but not chemically. They can be separated.
What is a solution?
Two or more things mixed together chemically to create something new and cannot be separated.
If an object is more dense than water it will _______
Sink
How did we make slime?
- Glue
- Food coloring
- Glitter
- Activator
True or false
Since we are using the same ingredients we use at home to cook, it is safe to taste our science experiments
False
It is never safe to taste a science experiment
Give 3 examples of a mixture.
- Trail mix
- Cereal
- Salad
Give 3 examples of a solution.
- Lemonade
- Salt water
- Sugar water
What is density?
How much mass is packed into a certain volume
Think back to day 1 of density. What was the first experiment we did?
Density layers
We did several experiments that resulted in a chemical reaction that looks like bubbles. What is the name of the bubbles?
Carbon Dioxide
What part of the lava lamp experiment was a mixture?
- Baking soda and oil
- Vinegar and oil
- Glow stick in the oil
What part of the rainbow bubbles experiment was a solution?
- Food coloring and water
Explain the density layers experiment, and why we saw the separate layers.
Oil
Water
Syrup
The oil is less dense than water and syrup so it sits on top
The water is more dense than oil, but less dense than syrup so it sits in the middle
The syrup is more dense than water and oil
Think back to day 1 of summer school. What experiment did we do?
Lava Lamp
Sometimes when we do experiments, only some groups are successful and others are not. Why?
Even though we use the same ingredients and follow the same steps to make an experiment, sometimes we do something wrong or miss a step resulting in a failed experiment.
What part of the volcano experiment was a mixture?
Plate, tin foil, tape, cup
Think back to the lava lamp experiment and the rainbow bubbles experiment, but we got a different result in each experiment. Why?
In both experiments, we made carbon dioxide from baking soda and vinegar. In lava lamp the oil carried the carbon dioxide bubbles around the bottle. In the rainbow bubbles, there was nothing to carry the carbon dioxide bubbles, so we saw the "foam" reaction instead.
In the underwater color burst experiment we saw a different reaction in both cups even though we used the same ingredients. Why did this happen?
Water and oil do not mix, but food coloring and water mixes. Because each ingredient has different densities we see the water sinking to the bottom of the oil.
Explain the candy heart experiment
The candy hearts are more dense than tonic water, so they sunk to the bottom when we dropped them in the jar. The carbonation in the tonic water filled the holes in the candy hearts and lifted them up. When we added baking soda to the jar, the reaction started again.
What are the 3 states of matter?
Liquid, solid, gas
