What is the purpose of the signal phrase in the following sentence:

According to J.K. Rowling, "You can’t be a good writer without being a devoted reader."

Why do we need "According to J.K. Rowling," ?

The signal phrase is your own sentence that introduces the quote. It should flow grammatically into the quote, and it makes the quote a part of YOUR writing, which should be more prominent than your research. Without the signal phrase, you have a "drop quote" error.

The steps you should follow to ensure that you're not "stacking the Works Cited" or leaving out sources. These are the steps to make sure each Works Cited entry matches up with your essay's intext entries. Describe the steps.

The steps are...

1.) Check each entry in the Works Cited to make sure that you have at least one corresponding citation intext.

2.) Check each citation intext to make sure that you have at least one corresponding citation on the Works Cited. 

3.) Delete extras on the Works Cited & add any missing citations in both locations.

(Pro tip: use Microsoft's search function to quickly find author names and titles in the document)

Scenario: is it plagiarism?

Student finds the perfect article and summarizes an interesting point made by the author in her essay. She forgets to tell who that author is in her writing or parenthetical citation. But she does include the source's entry on Works Cited.


Yes, this student could be accused of plagiarism, even if accidental. When there is no citation intext, then it is assumed that the student is claiming credit for that idea or sentence. When a student claims credit for an idea that's not hers, that's plagiarism.
