This is why you need a works cited page and how you know what information each entry needs.
What is: You must document sources by indicating what information you have used--whether facts, opinions, or quotations--and where you found this information. Works Cited also provides the reader with a list of sources for further information. To use another person's ideas or expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source is plagiarism.

This is why you have to put parenthetical citations after quotes in your document when you have a works cited page.
What is author (or, self) credibility. Parenthetical citations direct your reader to the source in your alphabetical list of works cited. This allows your reader to locate the exact source for further study. You need to give credit to the original source of information; otherwise, you will be plagiarizing or stealing another person’s work.

This is a phrase, clause, or even sentence which leads into a quotation or statistic. These generally include the speaker/author’s name and some justification for using him or her as an expert; it may also help explain why you're providing the quote/statistic.

You know what a quote is, but what exactly is a paraphrase (and why is it not plagiarizing?)
A paraphrase is a passage borrowed from a source and rewritten in your own words. A paraphrase should be true to the original author's idea, but is rewritten in your own words and sentence structure. Since you are using someones else’s ideas and expressing them in your own words, it is very important to give credit to the source of the idea.

Are the in-text citations different for a quote versus a paraphrase? Give an example.
Technically, no. But probably, yes. Both in-texts need the author's name and the page number. But when paraphrasing, you are more likely to specify the author's name in the sentence, negating the necessity for the name in the in-text. On the other hand, it's a good idea to specify the author when you're quoting too.
