What is the standard unit of measurement used all around the world?
Meter
Madeline and Arya work to help a zookeeper measure two snakes. One snake measured 41 cm and the other 64 cm. What was the difference in length between the two snakes?
One Step: 64 - 41 = 23 cm
The difference in length between the two snakes is 23 cm.
What's the word we use to estimate?
About
What's the strategy when we say "about ___" use to approximate something close to what we have measured.
Estimation
Every Monday, Mr. Corvino normally has 4 cups of coffee before class begins at 9 AM. On Tuesday, he normally has 2 fewer cups. How many cups of coffee does Mr. Corvino normally have on Monday and Tuesday?
Step One: 4 cups on M - 2 = 2 cup on T
Step Two: 4 + 2 = 6 cups of coffee
Mr. Corvino normally has 6 cups of coffee on Monday and Tuesday.
Which is closest to how long a key is, 5 cm or 5 m?
5 centimers/5 cm
It took Cyrus 67 small paper clips to measure the length of a park bench. He measured again using large paper clips and used 34 fewer paper clips. How many total paperclips did Cyrus use all together?
Two Step
Step One: 67 small paper clips - 34 = 33 large paper clips
Step Two: 67 + 33 = 100 paper clips
Cyrus used 💯 paper clips all together.
What is a hard tool we use to measure often marked in centimeters across the top and inches across the bottom?
Ruler/Meter Stick
What's the strategy we use when we precisely find the size of an object using either standard or non-standard units.
Measurement
Chinedum and Clarissa drew lines. Chinedum's line is 84 cm long. Clarissa's line is 16 cm longer. How long are Chinedum and Clarissa's lines put together?
Step One: 84 cm Ch + 16 = 100 cm Cl
Step Two: 100 + 84 = 184 together
Chinedum and Clarissa's lines put together are 184 cm long.
How many meters is 700 centimeters?
7 meters
A beaver named Benny was born 25 cm long. Over the past few months, Benny the beaver grew another 23 cm. How long is Benny the beaver now?
One Step: 25 + 23 = 48 cm
Benny the beaver is 48 cm long now.
What does width mean?
The distance from the end of one side to the end of the other side.
What's the strategy meant to help us measure/estimate something larger than the unit we are measuring with?
Mark and Move Forward Strategy
Michael bought a pond near his house because it had 50 box turtles in it. After a week went by, he noticed their were 40 more map turtles than box turtles. How many turtles were all together in the pond?
Step One: 50 box turtles + 40 = 90 map turtles
Step Two: 90 + 50 = 140 total turtles
There are 80 turtles all together in the pond.
Estimate the length of one long step. Be sure to tell us the unit.
About 1 meter or about 💯 centimeters.
My dog Jagger is 14 cm tall. My dog Mia is 20 cm taller. How tall are the both of them combined?
Two Step
Step One: 14 cm Jagger + 20 = 34 cm Mia
Step Two: 14 + 34 = 48 cm combined
My two dogs Jagger and Mia are a combined 48 cm tall.
In math, how do we find the difference?
Subtract the smaller number from the larger number
What's the strategy meant to help us solve measurement/estimation problems by comparing a known part to an unknown part?
Tape Diagram
Aristo's green ribbon is 6 m long. His purple ribbon is 4 m shorter than his green ribbon. He decides to tape them both together. How long is his new green and purple ribbon after Aristo tapes them together.
Step One: 6 m green ribbon - 4 = 2 m purple ribbon
Step Two: 6 + 2 = 8 m new ribbon
When Aristo tapes them together, his new green and purple ribbon is be 8 m long.
If I was to measure/estimate the height of a full-size tree in my backyard, would it be easier for me to measure/estimate in meters of centimeters? Why?
It would be easier for me to measure in meters because the size of the object helps us know which unit we should use. Smaller objects are easier measured in centimeters. Since I know a full-size tree is larger than a meter, it would be easier to measure the height of the tree in meters.
Luna was knitting a scarf. When she started knitting on Saturday, the scarf was 12 cm long. By the end of the day, the scarf was 39 cm long. How many cm of scarf did Luna knit on Saturday?
One Step: 39 - 12 = 27 cm
Luna knit 27 cm of scarf on Saturday.
What does height mean?
The distance from the top end to the bottom end.
What's the strategy meant to help us solve any word problem?
Read. Draw. Write.
There are 3 student birthdays during the month of October. From November to December, there will be 4 more students birthdays than in October. How many birthdays will there be during the combined months of October, November and December?
Step One: 3 Oct birthdays + 4 = 7 Nov-Dec birthdays
Step Two: 3 + 7 = 10 birthdays combined
There will be 10 birthdays in the combined months of October, November and December.
