What is a summary?
A summary is a paraphrase of the most important information in an article.
What is a reporting verb? Where or how is it used?
In academic writing (essays, summaries, reports, etc.), you use a reporting verb to refer to the research of others and incorporate this information into your writing.

What should a summary NOT include?
A summary should NOT include:

•what you think the author is trying to say.

Reporting verbs are usually written in the Simple Present Tense.
They can also be written in the Past Tense; however, using the present tense shows that the work is more current. Also, the past tense will give readers the idea that the research is longer valid.
