Alternative Feeding Methods
This alternative feeding method requires that the infant be able to latch well.

What age gestation should be included in a late preterm infant's feeding plan?
Any baby less than 38 weeks
I might consider one of these alternative feeding methods if the baby is unable to latch, but is awake, alert and ready to feed.

1. How often should the baby go to breast?
2. Does the baby need a supplement?
3. If so, how much to give and how should it be given?
4. Should mom pump?
5. What kind of f/u will mom/baby receive? In hospital? In ped's office? OPC?
1. Most likely will be an extended feeding plan as the baby most likely will not feed consistently at the breast until about 2-3 weeks after due date.
2. Due to long term status, the baby may take a bottle instead of another alternative feeding method.
3. Follow-up should be very carefully monitored. Need to plan for more visits to the ped's office and OPC.
4. Even more TLC needed for parents as this can take several weeks.
This alternative feeding method is helpful to teach the baby how to coordinate sucking and swallowing.

At about 6 weeks of age, this may happen with an infant's stool frequency.
