I am the most severe of the hemorrhaging
Arterial hemorrhaging
Three phases of wound healing
Inflammatory phase, Proliferating phase, Maturation stage
superficial burn, affects out layer of skin, sunburn or hot water can cause this type of burn
1st degree
Most common examples of DME
dialysis machines, CPAP machines, 02 , orthotics/prostheses, beds, wheelchairs, bath chairs
type of wound made by sharp, pointed instrument (bullet, nail) external bleeding usually minimal, infection will most likely occur
Puncture wound
what is difference between dressings and bandages
dressings are sterile and bandages are non-sterile
Inflammatory phase
This burn is deep enough to damage the nerves and bones. Tissue burned is charred and white. Fire, hot water, hot objects or electricity
3rd degree burn
How does a pt become eligible for DMEPOS?
health care provider must order the item through a rx or medical order form to be submitted to supplier
Three types of hemorrhaging
arterial, venous and capillary
a partial or total separation of a wound's edges
dehiscence
occurs 21 days -2yrs after wound. This phase involves tissue cells strengthening and tighten would closure. forms scar
Maturation phase
How would you treat a severe burn
call 911 then do NOT remove clothing stuck to burn, remove tight items (jewelry, belts) burned areas swell quick. Check breathing. If needed CPR, cover burn, loosely cover with gauze or clean cloth, Raise burned area above heart level if possible. Watch for signs of shock
How does the healthcare provider get prior authorization (PA) to prescribe a DMEPOS to a pt?
submit necessary forms and info to DME MAC for review (Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractor)
a detailed emergency protocol that outlines the steps to be followed in the event of an office emergency
emergency action plan
superficial reddening of the skin
erythema
a CCMA should do this prior to donning sterile or non-sterile gloves.
wash your hands!!!
this burn goes through both layers of skin and underlying tissue- possible to involve bone and muscle. no feeling in area because nerve endings are destroyed. cause is often flames and chemicals
4th degree burns
who defines what qualifies as DMEPOS
Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
Incision
The wound edges are separated and protrusion of abdominal organs
evisceration
This wound healing phase happens 4- 21 days after incident. Fibrin threads extend across the opening of wound, and eschar or scab forms to keep out micro-organisms
Proliferating phase
2nd degree burn
Required to qualify as DME (durable medical equipment) DMEPOS
serve as medical purpose, prescribed, used repeatedly, lifetime of at least 3 yrs. be used in home, only be useful to pts who have disability/injury
Emergency action plan should include these 4 things (according to NHA)
