In the late 1800s, going to school was different from today. Instead of riding to school by bus or car, children walked. Back then, many kids walked as far as four miles to school. Rather than separate rooms for each grade, many schools had just one room. One teacher might teach grades one through eight together in one room. And while your school probably has a heating system, in the 1800s they used a wood stove in the classroom. The teacher and older students kept the fire going all winter long.

We usually buy honey in a jar, but where does it come from? Honey starts with bees flying around looking for flowers. Once they find flowers, the bees collect nectar, which is a sugary liquid inside flowers. The bees fill up on nectar, then carry it back to their beehive. Next, other bees in the hive take the nectar. These bees put the nectar into little holes in a honeycomb, or frame made of wax. Finally, the bees fan the nectar with their wings to dry it. This makes the nectar thicker, until it becomes honey!

Smartphones are phones that are used for more than making calls and sending messages. People count on them for getting directions and finding information on the internet. People also have fun listening to music, taking pictures, and playing games on their phones. On the other hand, smartphones have some downsides. They can make it hard to keep your mind on important things, like studying. Some people even text during meals, or when spending time with their family. Driving while using a phone puts people in danger. Smartphones are useful, but they can cause problems if not used safely and politely.

You don't often see a goose flying by itself. The trouble is that it's hard work for a goose to fly alone. The wind pushes back against it as it flies. More commonly, you'll see a group of geese flying in the shape of a "V." When they do, the geese in front block some of the wind. This makes it easier for the geese flying behind. The geese take turns doing the hard work at the front of the "V." Using this plan, they are able to fly farther without getting as tired.

Gravity is the force that makes things fall to Earth. You can't see or touch it, but without gravity, life on Earth would be quite different. Everything would simply float away. If you jumped up, you would fly off into space. If you threw a baseball, it would never come down. Gravity is also the force that keeps Earth orbiting around the sun. So, without gravity, Earth might float away, too.

When you turn the lights on or off, the change causes your eyes to change, too. Light goes into your eyes through the pupils, the dark openings in the middle of your eyes. When the light is dim, there isn't as much light to let you see. Since there is less light, your pupils become larger to catch as much light as possible. For this reason, you can see even without much light. When the light becomes bright, your pupils get smaller. This is so that your eyes don't get too much light.

A good magic trick makes people believe they are seeing something amazing. But magic doesn't have to be hard to look real. One easy trick is to "bend" a spoon. First, hold the spoon's handle inside your hands with the end of the handle under your thumbs. Push the spoon's bowl down on the table. Next, let the handle slide down inside your hands. Since your hand is covering part of the handle, it will look like the spoon is bent.
