Refer to the drawing on the board. Which phase of the moon is this?

First quarter

In what position are the sun, moon, and Earth during a solar eclipse? You may draw a picture or write it out.
Sun, moon, Earth.

What is meant by high tide? What is meant by low tide?

High tide is the farthest point on shore that the tide rises up to. Low tide is the lowest point on shore that the tide rises up to.

200

Which phase of the moon follows full moon?

Waning gibbous

In what position are the sun, moon, and Earth during a lunar eclipse? You may draw it or write it out.
Sun, Earth, moon.

What are spring and neap tides?

Spring tides are the highest tides; this is when the moon, sun, and Earth are all in a straight line. When the sun and moon are at right angles to each other and this produces a weaker tide known as neap tides.

Name all phases of the moon, in order, starting with New Moon.

New moon, waxing crescent, 1st quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, waning crescent.

Why do we have seasons?
Because Earth is tilted!!!
300
What are tides?
Tides are the alternating rise and fall of sea level produced by the gravitational attraction of the moon and sun.
400

What are the definitions of waxing and waning?

Waxing means increasing light on the moon. Waning means decreasing or getting smaller.

400
During which phase of the moon do we see a lunar eclipse?
Full moon.
400
Would the damage caused by a hurricane be worse during high or low tide? Why????
Damage would be worse during high tide because the tide is higher and this would cause more flooding and higher surf.
500
If only a small portion of the moon was illuminated, which phase might this moon represent?
Either waxing or waning crescent.
500
Why don't we see a lunar or solar eclipse every month?
Because the moons orbit is tilted 5 degrees to Earth's orbit. This means that normally the moon is just above or just below Earth's shadow so it doesn't get blocked. Occasionally, the moon's orbit passes through Earth's shadow and this is when we have an eclipse.
500

Why do we have tides?

We have tides because of the graviational pull of the moon and sun on Earth.
