This is how old Mormon was when he led the Nephite armies
What is 16
(Ch 2:2)
When Mormon was able to lead the Nephites to victory over the Lamanites, they responded by doing this:
Boast in their own strength
Swear before the heavens to avenge themselves of the blood of their brethren
Swear by the throne of God to go [wipe them out].
(Ch 3:9-10)
This is why the Nephites began to lose their battles
Because they went up unto the Lamanites to battle [instead staying in a defensive battle]
(Ch 4:4)
Mormon repented of his oath even though he didn’t have this:
I was without hope, for I knew the judgments of the Lord which should come upon them
(Ch 5:2)
This is the place where the Nephites were destroyed
Cumorah
(Ch 6:2)
Why did the people “begin to cry even as had been prophesied by Samuel the Lamanite”?
No man could keep that which was his own, for the thieves, and the robbers, and the murderers, and the magic art, and the witchcraft which was in the land
(Ch 2:10)
When the people finally became too wicked, this is what Mormon did about it
I did utterly refuse from this time forth to be a commander and a leader of this people.
(Ch 3:11)
This is how the wicked are punished
It is by the wicked that the wicked are punished.
(Ch 4:5)
How did any of the Nephites survive a battle?
Those whose flight was swifter than the Lamanites’ did escape, and those whose flight did not exceed the Lamanites’ were swept down and destroyed
(Ch 5:7)
In this year the Nephites had their final battle and were entirely destroyed
385 ad
(Ch 6:5)
Mormon’s reaction when he saw their lamentation and their mourning and their sorrow before the Lord
My heart did begin to rejoice within me, knowing the mercies and the long-suffering of the Lord.
(Ch 2:12)
Read v13: Sorrowing only because of the consequences of sin can prevent us from coming unto Jesus Christ with broken hearts and contrite spirits.
This is how Mormon felt about the Nephites
I had loved them, according to the love of God… with all my heart; Nevertheless, it was without faith because of the hardness of their hearts.
(Ch 3:12)
Also read verse 13: If we choose to not repent, then we will experience the full consequences of our sins.
When the Lamanites captured women and children, they did this
Sacrificed them to idols
(Ch 4: 14)
Mormon does not want us to sorrow too much because of the Nephites, but he shares some of what he has seen because he knows this:
All things which are hid must be revealed upon the house-tops
(Ch 5:8-9)
Before the battle, Mormon did this:
I hid up in the hill Cumorah all the records which had been entrusted to me by the hand of the Lord, save it were these few plates which I gave unto my son Moroni.
(Ch 6:6)
When Mormon got the plates of Nephi at age 24, he wrote something different than what he has written to us in the smaller Book of Mormon record. What did he tell us that he is not telling us?
Upon the plates of Nephi I did make a full account of all the wickedness and abominations; but upon these plates I did forbear to make a full account of their wickedness and abominations
(Ch 2:18)
Who will judge the 12 tribes of Israel?
The 12 disciples who Jesus chose in Jerusalem
(Ch 3:18)
The Nephites gained no more power over the Lamanites starting in this year
375th (374 ad)
(Ch 4:16, 18)
Mormon knows that these people will sorrow for the calamity of the house of Israel
Their seed, The Gentiles who have care for the house of Israel, that realize and know from whence their blessings come
(Ch 5:10-11)
Read v11 - Through repentance, we can be clasped in the arms of Jesus.
If you count up all the “So-and-so and his 10ks” you get that 230,000 Nephites died. This is how many Nephites survived the great and terrible battle
24
(Ch 6:11)
Even though Mormon lived among a very wicked people, what did he know that gave him hope?
(Hint: Wo is me because of their wickedness; for my heart has been filled with sorrow because of their wickedness all my days; nevertheless, I know ….)
I know that I shall be lifted up at the last day.
(Ch 2:19)
Mormon explains three reasons why he wrote this abridgement of the Nephite record we know as the Book of Mormon
That ye may know that ye must all stand before the judgment-seat of Christ … to be judged of your works, whether they be good or evil.
That ye may believe the gospel of Jesus Christ
That he Jews shall have other witness besides him whom they saw and heard, that Jesus, whom they slew, was the very Christ and the very God.
(Ch 3:20-22)
When Mormon saw that the Lamanites were about to overthrow the land, this is what he did:
He gathered all the records which Ammaron had hid up unto the Lord.
(Ch 4:23)
Mormon tells us five reasons why he is writing this Book of Mormon
That the unbelieving of the Jews may be persuaded that Jesus is the Christ
That the Father may restore the Jews, or all the house of Israel, to the land of their inheritance
That the seed of this people may more fully believe the gospel (5:14-15)
To remember the prayers of the righteous (21)
That we/ye Gentiles may repent and humble ourselves before God, lest he come out in justice against us. (5:24)
Seeing the hundreds of thousands of dead Nephites, this is what Mormon testifies of:
The day soon cometh that your mortal must put on immortality, and these bodies which are now moldering in corruption must soon become incorruptible bodies; and then ye must stand before the judgment seat of Christ, to be judged according to your works. O that ye had repented before this great destruction!
(Ch 6:21-22)
