Total path an object travels.

What is Distance?

100

3 m/s North is an example of what?

A velocity

100

A car travels 98 meters in 10 seconds. What is the cars speed?

9.8 m/s

100

What is the formula for finding speed?

Speed = Distance / Time

100

A baseball player moves their glove backwards when catching a fastball. Why does moving the glove backwards during the catch make it less painful?

Increasing the time over which the ball's velocity decreases causes less force!

200

Motion is the change in an objects what?

Position

200

Which car has the greatest acceleration?

Car A

200

A runner goes around a 1 mile track and ends up where he started what his is displacement?

Zero

200

A horizontal (flat) line on a velocity vs time graph shows ________ acceleration.

Zero

200

Two runners are competing in a 100 meter race. Runner A starts from a standing position and Runner B uses starting blocks. Both runners reach the same top speed. Who will win the Race? Why?

Runner B! By using starting blocks, more acceleration can be achieved quickly in the horizontal direction!

300

Final position - Initial Position.

What is Displacement?

300

Describe the motion of section A in this distance vs time graph.

Constant velocity

300

What is the velocity at 5 seconds?

6 m/s

300

What is the independent variable?

Time

Swimmers push off the wall and hold their bodies in a long, narrow position before beginning their strokes. Why don't they immediately start swimming with their arms?

Streamlined bodies allow for less water resistance, allowing more of their velocity from the push-off!

400

Acceleration is the change of __________ over time.

Velocity

400

What are all the ways an object can accelerate?

Speed up, Slow down or change direction

400

A car traveling at 20 m/s comes to a stop in 5 seconds. What is the acceleration?

-4 m/s2

400

Describe the motion of section A in this velocity vs time graph.

Slowing Down

400

You throw a ball straight up. At the exact moment the ball reaches its highest point, someone says "The ball isn't accelerating because it's not moving." Is the student correct? Explain.

No! While it's velocity is zero in that instantaneous moment, Gravity still causes an acceleration of 9.8 m/s2 down towards the ground!

500

The slope of a Velocity-Time Graph.

What is Acceleration?

500

Two people travel from Bismarck to Fargo, one by car at a velocity of 95 km/hr, and one by plane at a velocity of 275 km/hr.  Can their displacements by equal? Explain.

Yes, their displacements are equal as long as both people travel the same distance in the same direction.

500

How long will it take an object traveling 25 m/s to reach a distance of 125 meters?

5 Seconds

500

In movies there are scenes where a horse and rider come to a fence; when the horse stops the rider flies over the horse's head. Explain why this happens.

Since you are riding the horse both the motion of the horse and yourself are the same. When the horse comes to a stop and you are not secured then you will fly off at the speed the horse was moving when it stopped. This all happens because of the momentum of the horse.

500

Two runners are traveling around a curved track at exactly the same speed. Can their velocities be different?

Yes! Velocity includes direction, and their direction can be different!
