When a client perceives one's free will or choice being threatened, they may react negatively, with anger, adhere more strongly to the opposite side of the argument, or chose to continue the behavior in question.

This strategy is helpful when the client is stuck in Sustain Talk. That is, engaging in discussion against change or in favor of the status quo. The SW should pause and consider the situation, and consider if he/she was arguing for change. If yes, then the SW should shift strategies and express understanding of the client's point of view while emphasizing personal choice.
