How does orographic rainfall operate?

When moist air hits a land mass (mountain) and is forced to rise. As it goes up, the air gets colder. As it gets colder, the moisture turns into clouds and rain. This is why the side of the mountain facing the wind (the windward side) gets lots of rain.
