What are the three reasons that Australia is the hottest and driest continent in the world?
1. It is dominated by high pressure systems for most of the year
2. Mostly a flat continent except for the Great Dividing Range positioned close to the east coast preventing moisture penetrating inland due to orographic rainfall.
3. Cold ocean currents off the south west coast.
Who are the traditional owners of the land that Terrigal High School sits on?
Darkinjung people.
What primary school did Mr Naven go to?
Explain how orographic rainfall operates.
When moist air hits a land mass (mountain) and is forced to rise. As it goes up, the air gets colder. As it gets colder, the moisture turns into clouds and rain. This is why the side of the mountain facing the wind (the windward side) gets lots of rain.
What is the name of Australia's largest underground reservoir.
Great Artisan Basin
What year was Terrigal High School founded?
1978.
What sport did Mr Naven play for NSW in?
Waterpolo
Explain the impact the Great Dividing Range has on the distribution of rainfall across eastern Australia. How does this impact the types of biomes found on either side?
The Great Dividing Range plays a crucial role in the distribution of rainfall across eastern Australia due to a process called orographic rainfall. When moist air from the ocean moves inland and encounters the mountains, it is forced to rise. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, causing increased rainfall on the windward (eastern) side of the range. This results in temperate forests in the south and tropical forests in the North. However, the western side, receives significantly less rainfall. The air descends, warms, and becomes drier. As a result, the more west you travel, the drier the land becomes. Therefore, grasslands and dessert characterise most of the western side of the GDR.
What biomes off the coast of North Australia can you observe from space?
The Great Barrier Reef
