YOU!

100

Scenario: Your group is given a discussion question. Everyone reads the question, but no one says anything because everyone is waiting for someone else to start. What should you do?

Someone needs to take the initiative and start the conversation. Share an idea, ask a question, or build off something someone else has said. Participation is expected.

100

Yes, mistakes are proof you are trying!

200

Your group is having a discussion, but two people are talking over each other while another student is trying to share an idea. What should the group do?

Stop talking over each other, listen to the person speaking, and give everyone a chance to contribute. Good participation means sharing the conversation, not dominating it.

200

Share, discuss, recommend, wonder and analyze our independent reading book.

It is MY responsibility to do my work.

300

Recognize that the conversation has gone off topic and redirect the group back to the assignment. “Let’s get back to the question…”

300

What is the Article of the Week, and how often do you complete one?

An article to read & analyze through comprehension questions.
400

The bell rings, but Mrs. Jimenez is still talking to your class. What should you do?

Wait to be dismissed. She must say "Go forth with courage!"

400

Describe the ideal first few minutes of class from the moment you enter until instruction begins. Name at least four things you should do

1)Get settled

2)Review materials from the previous day

3)Sharpen your pencil

4)Prepare to learn & participate

400

A student doesn't understand a difficult assignment, so they copy someone else's answer. Why doesn't that actually help the student learn?

Because they aren't learning or practicing a skill. They are simply copying someone else's learning.

400

Scenario: You are completing a paper-based assignment that does not require a Chromebook. You get stuck on a question and think, “I’ll just look up the answer really quickly.” What should you do instead, and why?

Don't use the Chromebook unless the assignment calls for it. Try to work through the question yourself first—review your notes, reread the text, think it through, or ask for help. The struggle is part of learning.

All of my materials including my writer's notebook, homework and book club materials should stay...

Neat and organized

500

You’ve finished class and your table has a few papers on the floor. The teacher hasn’t dismissed you yet. What are two things you should do before leaving?

Check your area for you belonging and clean up any trash/papers/items left behind. Push your chair in when you're dismissed.

500

Scenario: You walk into class. The bell has just rung. You notice your friend is talking to you, your pencil needs sharpening, and there are some papers in the middle of your table. Your Do Now is projected on the board.

What should you do, and in what order, to be ready to learn?

Find your seat → put your backpack away → sharpen your pencil → identify your Do Now → leave other papers/materials in the middle of the table → begin the Do Now → review previous learning and prepare to participate.

500

You are struggling with an assignment and don't know how to begin. Explain three productive things you could do before asking your teacher.

1) Review the directions

2) Look over your materials/notes

3)Give it a shot! "I don't know" or "I didn't understand" is not an acceptable answer.

500

Scenario: Your group is working on an assignment. One person is doing all the talking, two people aren't contributing, and another student has their Chromebook open even though the assignment doesn't require technology. What should the group do to get back on track?

The group should make sure everyone participates.

  • The student doing all the talking should make space for others.
  • The quieter students should share ideas or questions. Invite these friends in!
  • The Chromebook should be closed/put away unless the assignment requires it.
  • Everyone should refocus on the task!
