What Subatomic Particles do we use to identify an atom?

The subatomic particle used to identify an atom are the positively charged particles in the nucleus known as protons.

100

How are the elements on the periodic table arranged?

The elements are arrange in order of atomic number or number of protons.

100

A subscript (small number) tells you the number of what in a chemical formula?

The number of atoms of an element a compound has.

100

What is the difference between a physical and a chemical change?

A physical change can be reversed and a chemical change cannot be reversed easily.

100
What is density?

Density refers to how tightly packed the molecules in a object or substance are. The less dense objects float. Density is calculated by dividing the mass by the volume.

200

There are three subatomic particles. What are there charges, mass, and location?

Protons are positively charged. They are located in the nucleolus and have 1amu. A neutrons is neutrally charged. They are located in the nucleus and have 1amu. An electron is negatively charged, located in the electron cloud, and has 0amu.

200

Describe the groups, periods and families of the periodic table.

Groups are the vertical columns. Elements in the same group share the same number of valence electrons. Periods are the horizontal rows. Elements in the same period share the same number of electron shells. Families are groups of elements with similar properties.

200

How many oxygen atoms are there in Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) NaHCO3?

There are 3 oxygen atoms in NaHCO3

What kind of changes is happening in the water cycle? Explain.

this is a physical change because the only thing that is changing is the state of matter. It is water in a solid form, liquid and gas but it is still water.

200

What is mass and Volume?

Mass is the amount of matter in something. Volume is the amount of Space it takes up.

300

What subatomic particle determines the reactivity of an atom?

The valence electrons determine an atoms reactivity. If an atom's shells are not full it is unstable and will therefore be reactive and form bonds with other atoms.

300

What is the most reactive group of nonmetals?

The Halogens which are located in group 17. They are reactive because they are missing 1 valence electron.

300

How many atoms of  magnesium, Oxygen, and Hydrogen are in the following compound? 3Mg(OH)2

There are 3 atoms of magnesium. There are 6 atoms of oxygen and 6 atoms of Hydrogen. In total there are 15 atoms.

300

What evidence can we see when a chemical reaction occurs?

A few possible signs of a chemical reaction are. Change in color, Gas Production, Light Production, Temperature change, Odor change, Precipitate forms.

300

What is the formula for Density, Volume and Mass?

D=m/v;   V=m/D;   M=v x D

400

What is the total number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in a platinum, Pt,  atom that has a mass number of 195?

Platinum has 78 protons and electrons. It has 117 neutrons because mass 195 minus atomic number 78 totals the number of neutrons.

400

Name the noble gas in period 3.

The Nobel gas found in period 3 is Argon. Elements in group 18 are known as noble gasses. They are stable atoms because there outer shell has 8 valence electrons.

400

Balanced or Unbalanced?

6C + 6H2O2 --->C6H12O6

Unbalanced there are 6 more oxygen atoms in the reactant than the product.

400

Describe the physical and chemical changes that occur in the digestive process.

Chewing your food is a physical change because its appearance is changing. A chemical change occurs when your body begins to break down the food.
400

You have a rock with a volume of 15cm3 and a mass of 45 g. What is its density?

Density is mass divided by volume, so that the density is 45 g divided by 15cm3, which is 3.0 g/cm3.

500

What is the total number of Neutrons, Protons, and Electrons in Florine.

Using APE-MAN and the element key we can find that Florine has an atomic mass of 19. It has 9 protons and electrons. It has 10 neutrons which we found by subtracting the atomic mass and atomic number.

500

List the following elements in order of their reactivity. Start with the most reactive and move to the least reactive. Ca , C, Br, K, He

K, Ca, Br, C, He

500

How many atoms of zinc, Hydrogen, and chlorine are in the reactant side of the equation? Is it a balanced equation?

Zn + 2HCl ---> ZnCl2 + H2

Reactant --> Product

There is 1 atom of zinc, 2 atoms of hydrogen and chlorine. This equation is balanced because there are the same number of atoms on both sides.

500

What are two facts that will always be true about the reactants and the products of a chemical reaction that takes place in a closed space?

The number of atoms in the reactants and the number of atoms in the products are the equal. The mass of the reactants and the mass of the products are equal.

500

An object with a mass of 4.8g was placed in 7mL of water. The water rose to 9mL. Calculate the density of this object.

volume of object is 9-7=2mL. Density 4.8g/2mL=2.4g/mL.
