7th graders share their rubric with 3 other grade levels.

1. Which ones?

2. What does this tell us?

1. 8th, 9th, and 10th grade

2. This rubric is new to us & we will be graded *a bit* easier because of that!

So BREATHE! It's going to be okay :)

200

1. What are you trying to do when writing a hook?
2. What's an easy way to do this?

Grab the reader's attention. Use a though-provoking question or a personal story.

200

Why is a claim sentence important?

It tells the reader which point you are arguing (argumentative) or teaching (expository). It also keeps you focused in that paragraph.

200

Why is restating the thesis important?

It reminds the reader of your overall argument and helps with organization.

200

Which one, argumentative or expository, informs or teaches the reader about a topic?

Expository

200

What's the tool that keeps you organized in your essay & gets you a 4 in Purpose/Structure?

Thesis! Your 3 points are your 3 body paragraphs.

300

Turn this into an evidence sentence:

"Ms. Thompson's students will pass their writing test with flying colors"

Let's just say it's from Source 1, paragraph 3!

In Source 1, the author claims that Ms. Thompson's students have done well on previous tests, and suggests that all of them "will pass their writing test with flying colors" (3).

300

How does stating why your audience should care help with the strength of your overall argument?

It helps with buy-in! When the audience cares, they are more likely to take your side and be effected by your essay.

Is this an expository or argumentative intro paragraph?

As technology continues to evolve, the debate over the impact of social media on society intensifies. While some argue that social media fosters connection and communication, others believe it contributes to social isolation and misinformation, and therefore should be managed better. Social media should be regulated because it can lead to harmful mental health effects, it increases the spread of misinformation, and undermines genuine human interaction.

Argumentative

300

What are some good ways to provide reasoning/elaboration to get a 4 in the Development section?

Give examples that explain the evidence/information further, list, name, describe, or define different parts for the reader; or incorporate relevant stories, examples, facts, and details

400

What does your thesis help you do and how does it help you do this?

It keeps you organized because each point corresponds to a body paragraph

400

Write a reasoning sentence for this claim and evidence.

Ms. Thompson's students are the best in the state of Florida because they are brilliant! According to Source 1, studies reveal that "Ms. Thompson's students' past test scores suggest that 100% will pass their writing test with flying colors" (3).

This evidence shows that Ms. Thompson's students are extremely smart and therefore the best group in the state of Florida because they have proven themselves to be proficient in their writing skills. The predicted 100% passing rate displays their brilliance as it is more common in other schools to have a lower percentage of passing scores.

400

How would you zing (last sentence in your conclusion) if this was your HAT?

I remember the day my grandmother taught me the value of hard work, and that experience shaped my perspective on desiring to learn trades like welding in school. Schools should use more resources teaching trades to their students because they will learn the value of hard work, they will be prepared to step into a career close after graduation, and it will help provide trade workers for the country through the shortage.

Being provided with the opportunity to learn a trade would help me practice the hard work my grandmother raised me to value. It's time to instill this quality in our students.

Is this an expository or argumentative intro paragraph?

Dragging through the school day with heavy eyes and a tired mind can make even simple tasks feel impossible. Sleep plays an important role in how well students think, learn, and perform in school each day. The effects of sleep on student performance include improved focus, better memory, and stronger overall academic success.

Expository

400

What specific thing do you have to do in an argumentative essay in at least one body paragraph?

Acknowledge a counterclaim!

500

How do you acknowledge a counterclaim?

You mention the other side of the argument and prove it wrong.

Example: Some people argue that online friendships are just as meaningful as in-person ones because they allow people to connect from anywhere. While this can be true in some cases, in-person relationships often create stronger and more lasting connections.
