The word ḥanīf comes from the Arabic root ḥ-n-f (ح ن ف), which literally means to incline, to turn away from something crooked toward what is straight.
So, ḥanīf means someone who turns away from falsehood, deviation, or idolatry — and turns purely toward the truth and the oneness of Allah.
