I know, I know, I am sorry grandma. Thing is, I don't want to do my work because it's boring. It's not really difficult, I just don't want to do it. I mean, yes, my grades will impact my job prospects down the line... and getting more stamina, dead eye stats from attacking a bunch of challenges in RDR2 will be fun in the short term, it won't benefit me none in the long term. Ok, I will get my priorities straight and work more so I don't fail out of my classes.

Why is it not a good idea to heavily rely on one person as a primary coping skill? That is to say, that when yu are feeling blue, you can count on talking to a particular person all the time.

Someone unshaven, dressed in dirty clothes, ratty hair,  and missing teeth confronts you in the park and asks if you want to buy some drugs. He says "you look prett depressed- hey, these drugs will make you feel good and take away all your problems. You've got to try this stuff man!"

What do you say to this person?

"No thanks, I am feeling better each day. I get counseling for my worries and I have a lot of people who care about me and love me. I don't need drugs to make me feel better- they just hide the pain, and stop me from facing my feelings. My counselor says the more I reveal, the more I will heal. Drugs and alcohol will stop me from confronting life on life's terms and I can end up losing all my money, health and self respect.. kind of like you."
