What is the Rest Area used for?/ When should you use the rest area?
The Rest Area is used when you're having BIG emotions, and need to remove yourself before you end up at the take 5 table.
You should use the Rest Area when you're feeling emotions that are too big for you to control. These can be emotions like Panic, Anger, or Sadness.
Miss.Maniatis just handed you a Hand Drum, but is not finished passing out all of the instruments yet. Do you...

By listening to them, taking turns sharing, using nice words, and safe bodies.
When the music stops at the beginning of class, what do you do?
Stop Talking, sit down, and give the teacher your eyes, brains, ears!
How does your class move up on the piano?
By following class rules and procedures as a team!
For every class where there are no bad behaviors, your class moves up one note on the piano.
Classes with exceptionally bad behavior can move you down a note on the piano.
Once you reach an "Octave" (or 8 notes) your whole class earns some Music Bucks!
Sam is constantly playing the bucket drum during instruction, and now has just tossed the drum across the room. Trevor sits right next to Sam and watched everything that happened. Sam's bad behavior means that both Sam and Trevor loose instrument privileges for the next unit.

Trevor's bad behavior means his class won't move up on the piano today as a team, which will really let Sam down. However Sam is the only one who can affect Sam's right to play an instrument in music class.

This can include: Candy, assignment do-over, classroom karaoke day, end of class dance party, a positive letter or phone call home, or sitting in my comfy chair)
Isaac is participating in class when the teacher announces that the class will be performing in small groups for each other next week. Isaac feels a tightness in his chest and starts having a lot of panic in his breath. What should he do?
Raise his hand and ask to take a few minutes in the Rest Area. Isaac should use the calming strategies in the corner to feel his big feelings and let them pass. This is the time to practice controlling your breathing and your thoughts.
When the teacher comes to talk to Isaac, he should be as open as he can about how he feels, tell the teacher what caused him to panic, and work with her towards a solution to the problem.

When the teacher tells you to go to the Take 5 Table, what do you do? How do you earn your exit from the Take 5 Table?
You go over and sit at the Take 5 Table for 5 minutes.
Once the 5 minutes is over the teacher will let you know. At that time you can fill out a think sheet to earn your way back to class.
Evan just realized he has to use the bathroom, but it's not an emergency. The teacher is currently teaching a lesson, and he sees that both bathroom passes are already gone. How and when should he ask to use the bathroom?

Since it's not an emergency, Evan should wait until at least one of the bathroom passes has returned.
Once it has, he should raise his hand, wait to be called on, then take the pass with him to and from the bathroom.

How do you earn music bucks?
You earn music bucks as rewards. These rewards can be for exceptional behavior, helping the teacher with a task, or reaching an "octave" as a class.
When a classmate is talking or performing, how can you be a respectful audience member?
-Being Quiet and Still
-Actively listening (Giving them your Eyes, Brains, Ears)
-Responding, nodding, or clapping when they are done (whichever is most appropriate)
Mike was having a great day until Carmen got the last orange instrument. This made mike so angry he couldn't control it, and instead of asking to go to the Rest Area he takes his emotions out on Carmen by hitting her with his sweater. The teacher tells Mike he needs to go to the Take 5 Table.
What should he do?
Act out what he should have done instead of hitting Cameron for 100 bonus points!
He should go over to the Take 5 Table as calmly as he can and practice controlling his breathing and his thoughts until the teacher comes to check in with him.
After the teacher checks in, Mike needs to fill out some "Think About" sheets about his emotions and behavior. He will need to turn in any assigned "Think About" sheets before being allowed to participate in class again.
