They regularly used notes that were not part of the scale. They used chromatic tones and used them as parts of the main melody rather than just a "decoration" of the main part as was done in the past.

Recorded music has given the audience choices. The audience now dictates what the orchestra will play. The orchestra depends upon ticket sales for it's survival and many people refuse to listen to music that is radically different than the music the have in their own personal collection. "I like what I know and I know what I like"
