List 3 Similarities and Differences between Aboriginal and Maori Colonisation.

Similarities: 

  • Colonised by British

  • Major death from disease, respiratory illnesses as well as other diseases like smallpox and measles spread, infecting many indigenous peoples

  • Loss of land, displacement of indigenous people causing lack of access to traditional food sources and other resources.

Differences: 

  •  Violence  was the leading cause of death for Aboriginal people  whereas for Maori people it was other causes.

  • Life expectancy for Maori people was around 30 before colonisation, becoming 25 for men and 23 for women after colonisation.

  • More deaths of children in Maori people, over 50% of the deaths were children.

  • Māori language is more prevalent in post colonial society in NZ and spoken more commonly.
