Similarities:
Colonised by British
Major death from disease, respiratory illnesses as well as other diseases like smallpox and measles spread, infecting many indigenous peoples
Loss of land, displacement of indigenous people causing lack of access to traditional food sources and other resources.
Differences:
Violence was the leading cause of death for Aboriginal people whereas for Maori people it was other causes.
Life expectancy for Maori people was around 30 before colonisation, becoming 25 for men and 23 for women after colonisation.
More deaths of children in Maori people, over 50% of the deaths were children.
- Māori language is more prevalent in post colonial society in NZ and spoken more commonly.
